Go on Netflix and watch the documentary "Somm". Its about 6 people who are studying to take the master sommelier test. They could tell you with tasting not only what it is and what year but down to the 1000 square miles of the place the grapes were grown in the entire world. There are only about 240 Master Somms in the world today.

I watched this on a flight to Hawaii. It was one of the best documentaries I have seen. Simply amazing how difficult it is to pass the Master Somm testing. The skills these people developed from very hard work is absolutely incredible! I highly recommend watching this if you get a chance and you are even remotely interested in wine.

Agree. It's whatever you like. My sommelier could tell you which region in France the wine was grown in. Unbelievable

EDIT: he was a master in 1997 when there only like 12 in US and Las Vegas had half of them.

Not a wine guy but I thought it was a humorous read. You could say the same for cigars and coffee which I am into.

I'm a wine guy, and yes I do believe there's a lot of BS in the industry.

I'm not saying a cheap Chilean Red is as good (to Me) as a Pomerol, but on the whole, the human palate is close to worthless. Our tastebuds aren't anywhere close a dogs nose and memory of scent.

Australia's best known wine connoisseur was a guy called Len Evans. He lent his name to a 'wine-tasting' game in which a group of wine lovers (game for 4 to 8 players) try to identify several different masked wines.
It was based on the selection of key characteristics from a list of 'options' - e.g:
Is it a South Australian/Victorian/NSW wine? Is it a Shiraz/Cab Sav/Merlot? Is it a 2009/2001/1996? Is it a single variety/blend? etc.
It was always interesting that the most experienced people did not necessarily win the game.
Probably the only thing in common for the players was that they could generally agree on what they thought was the 'best quality' wine.

I used to think it was BS also, then I watched a show on TV. 3 wine experts blindly tasting, they were able to come up with the area, type of grape, vintage, cost. I was amazed. I may not be able to taste any differences, but clearly some people can.
