For the past few years I never really understood the Rolex hype...or got why folks loved their watches so much. I've seen Rolex AD's around the world and always thought they were fine looking watches but never understood why people thought they were incredible...that is, until I tried one on.

I don't think I'm the only one but you can't fully appreciate or understand just how incredible these watches are until you try one on. After that happens it doesn't take long to marvel at the quality and workmanship that is around designing and assembling these watches.

This may be a terrible analogy but in my opinion, in some ways Rolex is similar to Apple for tech. They won't always have the cutting edge tech built into their products but you can be assured their products are of the finest quality, battle tested and will not fail. For example, my SubC's movement isn't 70 hrs power reserve like my Navitimers was but it is far more reliable and durable than the B01, most importantly keeping better time.

I say all this because I used to not understand the Rolex hype but I can tell you that as soon as I tried on a SubC, I walked out of the AD that night with it on my wrist...and could not be happier! I now get it and appreciate Rolex for the icon brand it is!

Thanks! Ha, I'm thinking either a BLNR or a SS Daytona...two very different pieces, I know. We will have to see!

This is what others who don't own a Rolex don't understand. They always think another brand, sometimes a lesser like Omega (I happen to have a couple of my own) is a better watch than Rolex; but they are so wrong and I can tell you from my personal experience the many faults I had with my Omegas and none with my Rolexes.

kept my bond seamaster for many years and my ocean planet with orange bezel [ 44ml] for about six months,,,,,
For me omegas are fine but they sure are not a Rolex,,,,fitting and beauty is in another league with Rolex
my personal view only,,not putting down Omega,,great clasps on some,,,and really friendly service in there AD near Bond st station,Whenever my wife and i drive past Big Ben she always reminds me of my ocean lol,,,,,jasonp

The value of a Rolex isn't clear until you've owned it a long time. That's when the real quality difference show up.

You're obviously happy and excited which is what counts, but it is hype. The rehaut crown and the 12 o'clock marker regularly don't match up and I've owned several ceramic steel pieces to know this. I've had a couple with light pieces of debris on the face. I'm super anal so it also bugged me when this subc i had the bezel click didn't line up with the 12 marker too. it was like half click it'd line up, but on the click it's off. I've had another subc gold that lined up perfectly.

disappointing. and honestly the subc doesn't feel special. it feels really light and dainty at times.

don't mean to the spoil the party. just being real as a rolex owner.

p.s. i'm not so crazy i use a loupe - never

Nothing is perfect, hence the warranty (though RSCs leave something to be desired). Go look at the Patek sub for proof of that. If Rolex isn't you thing, perhaps you can recommend another brand that's able to stay water tight and hold good time 8 years after their last service? I've tried most of what's out there, and I haven't found another brand that can do it consistently.

Omega, Breitling, AP, you name it. Patek has an excuse. They're haute horology at its finest. Rolex, not at all. Tool watch for avg Joes.

Same here. I've had my GMT for 7 years and it's perfect. I'm saying this because it's my 1st Rolex after i owned many omegas which were far from perfect. I thought there was no such thing as perfect... and then I had my Rolex, so my thoughts were proven wrong: perfectness still exist and it's all concentrated inside all Rolexes (most of them) out there.

I bought my Daytona (which I'm wearing today) as 10 year old NOS. When it arrived, I wound it, pulled the stickers off, sized it, and put it on. It's been about +1 second/day for the last year. It's still water tight, and the crown gasket is still supple. That's what I've come to expect from Rolex, and I haven't been disappointed.

Of course, the lack of care in lining up the ceramic bezels is lame. However, I don't like any of those models so I don't care.

Out of my 3 Rolexes, the Daytona 116520 is my favorite. Nevertheless, you should try and learn to like the ceramic models as I have. My oldest Rolex, as I said before, is a ceramic model; it is beautiful in its own right and I would not change a thing about it. As the thread said: you wouldn't know about it before you've tried one on... including the ceramic models.

Sorry, I don't agree. I've taken almost every watch Rolex makes on an extended test drive at one point or another. So far there are three six digit references that I would own. My Daytona (which is an early thin hand model - I don't care for the maxi hand version), the 114720 Explorer (which isn't really a "six digit" model), and the now discontinued 40mm ceramic Sea Dweller (which I like less than my 16600 version).

All the rest? Not really interesting to me. The bracelets and clasps are nice on the new stuff, but all that can be retrofitted if someone wishes. It's OK to have particular tastes, this is a hobby after all.

Yep. To each his taste as you said. For me, I don't really care for older models and I'm always taken by the newer models namely Daytona, GMT, Explorer I. I like the perfection that they make for each of the models: the case, bracelet, dials, and of course the movements... things that older models don't have; I know most people won't agree, but this is my taste and each his I guess. Don't get me wrong, classics are still classics, but hey, I prefer buying new.
Btw, I don't like to meddle with original models, I other words, for me you buy it that way, it stays that way; this is how it becomes a classic later on and stays a classic if you already bought one.
