Even seemingly clean, upscale hotels are not immune.
Do any of you actually inspect for these pesky critters when traveling, or just pretend they don't exist and hope for the best?

I can't believe that these bugs, which in my childhood were believed by every child to be the entomological equivalent of the bogeyman, have been allowed to thrive for more than two decades since I first heard of an actual infestation.

It's an absolute disgrace in my judgement.

My suitcase and clothing never get near a hotel bed. Desk, bathroom counter, whatever, but hard surfaces only.

This is one thing I’m borderline paranoid about... bringing home a bedbug infestation to my house.

Getting bit is annoying, but I’ve been bit by lots of bugs in my life. Nothing compared to an infestation at home.

I brought a mob* of bedbugs home to Singapore from India two years ago. They are an absolute bastard to get rid of! S$2,000 (UK 1,100 US$ 1,520) for two treatments one week apart and I ended up having to do a third myself with some spray I bought at the supermarket.

After the first treatment, I had to take all my soft stuff outside of my bedroom wardrobes (bed linen, towels, etc.) to the laundry and wash & dry the lot. My domestic machine wouldn't have coped with the load and it would've taken two days. I ended up doing it all again after the third go.

Reading in bed one Sunday morning a week after the second treatment, I saw a movement in the corner of my eye and it was a bedbug, bold as brass, legging it across my bed TOWARDS me! You can imagine how that turned out so off I went to the supermarket, bought some sprays and did the whole lot again myself.

I damn near ruined my vacuum cleaner after pouring boiling water through the pipes, as I buggered all the seals. Roll of gaffer tape and it's good as new

I didn't see any for my remaining year in that particular condo so I must've finished the job.

Ever since that little drama, I now follow some basic practices. I always check hotel mattresses and sheets; never put my suitcase on the bed; keep my clothes in my suitcase as far as possible; carry a bottle of surface bedbug spray when I travel. I spray the outside of my case, including wheels, on arrival and again before I pack to leave. I would've though the cold in the aircraft hold would kill the little buggers but nope it's heat including hot, direct sunlight.

Fabric softner sheets are also a good deterrent (D.M. )


*apologies grammar police, I don't know the collective noun for bedbugs.
