Question #2 - How much did it cost?

Anyone else get completely annoyed when someone at work or out in public notices your watch and asks these two questions in order:

Is that a Rolex?

How much did it cost?

I don't get asked about my watches much, but I have had these two questions asked of me several times by pretty much anyone who doesn't own a Rolex themselves. Not sure why it bothers me so much. I just sometimes get the impression the only thing most of the public knows about Rolex is that they are expensive. Obviously when I bump into someone else wearing a Rolex the conversation is completely different and much more enjoyable.

Maybe I need to remember that before I got into this hobby I probably didn't know much more about Rolex than some of these folks do...

I remembered been asked two times. The first time was by a co-worker who was shopping a gift for his father and thinking a Rolex, but can't believe the price of the BLNR. The 2nd time was from a close friend who commented can't believe I was wearing "a BMW" on my wrist.

The feeling was a little awkward of course.

Hey, it could be 7 series if you own a platinum model.

I have been asked.

And normally, I don’t care.

But one time it was by a kid that is obsessed with money and possessions. And it was in front of a lot of people. It definitely made me uncomfortable and I did t like it.

I think my answer was along the lines of “it’s just a watch”. I honestly don’t recall exactly.

Ditto here, there was no grey line with my parents it was either black or white. I guess is the school mentality (it works though).
Cheers Bro

In all the years I have been wearing a Rolex watch, I have not had a comment about any aspect of ownership, I'm very pleased to say.

I've been asked maybe three times at work, same two questions, same order. I work in a cube environment so really everyone can hear your conversations. So, like superdog pointed out, it can really make you uncomfortable to have someone announce you are wearing an expensive watch to everyone in shouting distance. #1 it's really none of their business, but #2 if you really want to know there's this thing called Google that can get you the answer in seconds without having to ask me a rude question to get it.

I don't have too much of an issue if someone asks what kind of watch it is. But after that maybe just say you like it, which model is it, let me take a look, whatever. Don't just concern yourself with the cost.

I've been asked. In my eyes, it's none of their business how much I make, how much my house costs, my wife's bra size or what I paid for my watch.

Wow, there's a lot more that's off limits than I realized!

A chap, about the same age as me (104) behind the counter of my local hardware store, said, in a cocky, over familiar way,"wos y' Day'ona cost mate?"
I WAS tempted to tell him, he's not my mate, and it's none of his business.
But, well, you don't, do you?.............DO YOU?

I just said, "I've had it a long time and couldn't remember....Oh, and it's a GMT".
I felt a BIT bad about the GMT bit, but hey ho, I'm a grumpy old pensioner,
I'm allowed.

I'd only gone in to buy 4 candles.

Haha

I'm just saying, it's off limits and none of anyone's business. Some people would be free with information like this, but I'm not.

I don't know how it is in Canada, but in the US the price of a house is public information.

I have never been asked about the value of my watches.
But if I was asked about it I would tell them to have a look at the Rolex website if they really want to know.

I don’t I’ve been asked more than one time with an employee who as looking for a gift for her husband. She wanted to get him a watch. She knew I was into watches and asked me for suggestions. I gave her several suggestions within what I bought may be her budget. Eventually she asked about the one I was wearing (a GMT) I really tried to deflect the question but eventually I answered around 8. She said $800! Man that’s way more than I would spend.
