Icon5 BLNR for A Lange Saxonia Thin 37mm

Hello everyone,

I have an interesting trade I am going to run by you.
Would you trade a used Rolex BLNR with box and papers with 3 years left on warranty for an used Lange Saxonia Thin 37mm pink gold with box and papers purchased one year ago?

Both watches are in very good condition.

Thanks in advance.

As much as I love A. Lange, I don’t think I would. I eventually want to acquire a time piece from this brand, but I don’t think I would trade any of my current collection to do so. Good luck

That's a solid trade on paper. In practice, though, it's only a good trade if you'd actually wear the Lange.

I don't think I'd personally do it, but only because I wear my BLNR quite a bit and I don't think I'd wear the Lange much (and I already have other dressy watches, although none as nice).

Of my collection, my BLNR gets the most wear. I would add the Lange and not trade / replace.

Well let's see. Do you want a 37mm pink gold dress watch or a steel sports watch?

Lange is on another level, if you’ll wear it I would do that in a second!

Yes but what else is in your collection?

I am a huge Lange fan and have a Lange 1 stealth. Also having a BLNR I know it would be tough to choose just one. Is the BLNR your only (sports) watch? If you have other sports watches then I'd say sure go for it. If not then I would ask myself where I spend more time wearing watches, in the office and at events that are more formal/dressy or less exposed to the elements, or outside on the go, in the elements, more casual environments, etc.

The Lange design, movement, construction is amazing. The sapphire back allows you to have a glimpse into the amazing workmanship inside. Their rose gold is IMHO great and very elegant looking. The movement while elegant is robust compared to some Swiss movements. Lange goes to great strides to make a reliable dress watch that can hold up to daily wear without much concern.

The other thing to consider is whether or not you want to fly over or under the radar. Wearing a Rolex (esp a BLNR) garners many looks and comments (at least it has with me) where the Lange barely gets a second look let alone a comment. Those who know Lange will certainly appreciate it but most will not realize what it is. My father in law when trying on my Stealth said "this steel watch is really heavy for not having a bracelet". Little did he know it was platinum (which I never told him). Another experience was with an old boss who was a self proclaimed "watch guy". Not once did he ever notice or comment on my Lange 1. One time when wearing my 16610 Sub he went nuts and said "is that a Rolex? We're paying you way to much!". Funny the sub cost me $1700 in '94 and the L1 cost like 25x more.

I’d be very tempted. Do you own another SS sports watch?

If so go for it. Lange is the grail of grails for me

Not for a Saxonia. Unless you truly LOVE the Saxonia.

If you truly LOVE Lange, I would keep saving for a Lange 1.

My father has a Zeitwerk ST and Dato Up/Down, both of which I wear, and the level of detail on higher models is out of the this world.

I wouldn’t trade. The BLNR is far more versatile in my view. Are you on the lookout for a dress watch though? If so, go for the Saxonia.

The Lange is the 'better' watch - it is finer in its execution, it's better looking (by classical standards) and on and on. But, and here is the big caveat, it may not fit your everyday life as well as the Rolex. That's a personal decision.

Good luck with it. The good news is there is no wrong answer.

I love ALS. But be aware of you’re not going to keep it forever and are planning to flip it sometime in the future - in addition - care about future value, understand the ALS is going to take a huge dent compared to owning any Rolex.

Run, trade it now...!!! I’m serious. You’d be trading an all too common watch for a truly fine and rather rare one.

Definitely do it. The watch is worlds apart from rolex in terms of quality.

I have both and would trade in a heart beat. 8950 vs 14600 MSRP. Steel vs gold.
Do the trade and buy a BLRO later.

It’s clearly a money winner to do the trade. I have and love the WG 37mm Sax Thin, and it’s also my least worn watch. It’s a gorgeous piece, if you think you would wear it more than GMT it’s a no brainer.

Seems like this is a second thread on the subject...

As someone who has a BLNR and an ALS, I'd do that trade. In fact, I am contemplating the same thing. Here is why:

ALS is underpriced and undervalued. Pre-owned timepieces take a major hit with trusted sellers selling ALS Ultrathin 37mm watches for under $11K. Now, that's an intro level ALS and a simple dress watch. It is also worlds apart in level of finish and quality compared to any Rolex. Flip the watch aside and you'll be astonished. Take a magnifying glass to it and you'll be staring at beveling and gears. It is a truly remarkable watch that does not get enough recognition. Blame casual dress, the lack of market (ALS makes only a small number of watcher per year), and the craziness around SS Rolex models and you get yourself a favorable trade.

BLNR is a good watch, and just like any SS Rolex it makes a good daily driver. But if you have other sports watches in a collection, it is likely a duplicate.

Finally, unless you're stuck in t-shirts, ripped jeans, and flip-flops, you can dress down that ALS. So go ahead and run with the trade.

Shameless plug: If any one wants the same or a similar trade for a BNIB BLNR, lemme know.

Thank you for this comment. My only concern with the Saxonia was that it might be too dressy for casual dress. Sounds like it's quite versatile!
