Sharing my Midnight Blue Mt. Iwate GMT SBGJ231

I’ve had this watch for a few months now and thought I’ll just pen my thoughts.

The Grand Seiko’s 44GS case is the sexiest case that I’ve had the pleasure of owning. Borne out of Grand Seiko’s “Grammar of Design” in the 1960s, one of the tenets of this design philosophy is that surfaces and angles from the case, dial, hands, and indices have to be flat and geometrically perfect to best reflect light.

We see this evident from the 44GS case, with its sharp, angled lugs and their expansive tops showing off the Zaratsu mirror-polished finish in all of its glory. The wide surface area means that the watch catches even more reflections and because they are mirror-finished, they reflect a great deal of your surroundings distortion free. This has the result of providing the watch with a sense of fluidity, blending into its environment and with your attires. The GS which utilizes this case is no longer just a viscous slab of steel on the wrist, but one which is seemingly alive and unapologetically Grand Seiko.

And don’t get me started on the dial work. The pictures speak for themselves. In my opinion, this is the best looking Mt. Iwate dial. It has a bit of a sunburst and the blue helps to highlight and distinguish the different textures on the dial.

I love it! This ticks all my boxes. Blue dial, hi-beat, GMT complication. Too bad 2018 is a $0 watch fund year.

Yours is a gorgeous watch;
I have the maroon “Dawn on Mount Iwate “ one. The lugs almost appear faceted- there’s so many angles reflecting light .

I think this is the GS ive been looking for.

Wanted one withoutba date window. But does it make sense for a GMT watch to have no date?

Congratulations! You said you're making an upcoming trip to Tokyo - I assume then that you had this watch delivered to you? When I spoke to the boutique they said they didn't ship abroad, am I right to guess that you purchased it through an agent or second hand? Or have they changed their policy?

It's the perfect companion for your upcoming trip - congrats again.

I've had mine for a little over half a year, it's still lookin good!

Had to buy it grey. Both my local AD as well as a contact in Tokyo told me this is hard to source now.

I just love the dial. Most beautiful blue dial i have seen. Would have preferred if there was no date window but i suppose cant be a GMT watch without one.

Nice watch, sir. :)

I'm visiting Tokyo in June and Sapporo in Dec. Is it still difficult to source this watch, even in major Japan cities?

Wow, I owned the silver dial and ultimately sold it because it was a little too monochromatic for me. This blue one is gorgeous. Is it a LE? I had only seen white (silver), black and a green LE before.

It's not classified as a LE but I would say spiritually, it is. It is only sold at two specific boutiques in Japan (unless they've since expanded) and production numbers were low enough that you'd have to put down your name beforehand if you wanted to pick one up there. They call it a Boutique Edition.

Thanks for the info. Would there be any agents in Tokyo who provide the service of picking the watch up and shipping it to the buyer? I'm guessing this would be the only solution, apart from travelling there for the watch, which in my case would be a 30h trip...

There definitely are, but I don’t know how to contact them/where to find them so I personally can’t help you out there. I could imagine you could find such an agent through google but again I’m not sure. Good luck!
