Alternate options vs seadweller 116600?

I’m getting really close to pulling the trigger on a lightly use 18’ seadweller 116600. Before I do I wanted to look for other options that I may be missing... Heres my draws to the sd4000. I have a Batman, and 2 no date subs one on a rubberb and the other I am looking to replace with this sd4000.

These are just personal preference to help you understand why this is my current pick and could help you steer me into a different direction.

I like that they only made it a short period
40mm is a plus for me
It’s different in that the date has no cyclops... a last for Rolex possibly?
Dial is matte black which is nice for a change.
Lugs/ case wear slightly smaller than a 40mm sub

Depends if you’re buying primarily for investment (you mention the short production run of the SD4K) or for enjoyment.

Assuming the latter I think the SD4K is a great watch but make sure you’ve tried it on, it can feel a little bit top-heavy. Personally I’d also say your collection would have a pretty similar look - all black dial, diver-style, rotating bezel and 40mm so I’d be looking at other options either inside or outside of Rolex.

It’s a good idea to get SD4K. Like the lugs, graded bezel 360, raised crystal, no cyclops. Negative is the cost and the thickness.

SD4K is a great piece. I say go for it especially if you are replacing the sub with it!

Your reasoning makes sense but I'd not replace any of my Subs with the SD. Would be happy to add one though. Good luck.

The SD wears quite a bit different than the Submariners that you have FWIW

Are your subs both 6 digits? I do love the SD4000, but for what they are going for these days I'm not sure I would replace a modern SubC with one, I don't think I could justify the added cost if I already had the solid bracelet and the glidelock clasp. The pro's you listed are all good (except the date without a Cyclops, the DSSD has a date and can't have a Cyclops with the domed crystal), it would basically come down to if the super case lugs bothered me enough.

If this was 5 or so years ago when I walked into an AD and they offered me 10% off a SD4000 without me even asking for it, the choice would be easy, and I'm still kicking myself for not buying anything back then.

That's a very wise buy. I see no reason not to go for an Sd4k No brainer , best of all worlds for a Rolex diver.

Too thick. You're never going to use a regular Sub to its full potential, why buy an even more extreme one that sits too high on the wrist?

It’s a great watch and as others have stated can be slightly top heavy. However, with the different lugs and glide lock I have never had an issue even with a 6.75” wrist. The sub is lighter, flatter, but wears larger. I can’t talk you out of this one.

I actually just bought one today. I traded in a 5 digit submariner date for this. I found the following:

- It is very balanced. I don’t find it top heavy at all
- If you wear your watches tight, the 15mm height isn’t as noticeable
- This watch sits better on flatter wrists due to the cupped case back
- The lug to lug measurement is only 46mm. Your BLNR is 48. While 1mm on either side doesn’t seem like much, it’s noticeable and wears smaller
- For some reason the bezel insert seems like it’s more narrow also helping to give the watch a smaller overall look. I don’t know if it actually is narrower but it appears that way. Could just be an illusion because of the 24 hour bezel
- The matte dial is fantastic. Such a beautiful change of pace from the gloss of your sub and gmt.
- Not having a cyclops really adds balance.

All in all, this would be a good 3rd watch for your collection. Even if you’re not keen on the extra height and weight, you have 2 slimmer professional models to balance it out and interchange.

Here’s a picture on my 6.75 inch wrist. I also owned a BLNR. This definitely wears smaller, though on paper based on specs it’s hard to imagine.

Purchased used, full set from a local gray dealer. Luckily they had one that I could try on. Just fell in love with it. I don’t think the previous owner wore it much as the bracelet still has that new bracelet squeak.

The symmetry is as perfect as it gets (with a date)!

Yeah, I love that it has no cyclops ... It really adds to the symmetry of the dial. Overall, the watch is just really well balanced. The slimmer lugs, crown guards, this one is just really pleasing to the eye.

Plus the matte dial ... Icing on the cake.

That’s a very different watch. Decide which you want rather than focussing on the finances.

Go for the SD4K. It has a unique case and wears similar to 116610LN. No cyclops and matte dial is another plus. Price wont be dropping...

I will typically say get the watch you want but with what I think is a huge premium for the SD4K, I would say pass. The Submariner does so well that it is hard to make that purchase for me. I own a SD43 and a Hulk and would not add a SD4K. The watch does nothing for me with so many other options. That is strictly personal preference.

I would tent to usually agree with that opinion.

However if you’re someone who doesn’t like way the Sub looks on your wrist because of the case proportions and you want a 6 digit reference, you’re left with not much choice.

The SD4K was discontinued in 2017. Could it be that the one you have been offered is sold in 2018?

I’ve had mine since they were first available, collected on 02 May 2014 and it remains the one watch in my collection that will never be sold (subject to financial position) and its against some pretty fierce competition.

Even at the higher grey prices, it’s great value and I don’t think there is anything to touch it.

SD4K is a cool watch, and it's a short run/rarer watch. Plus, it's a black dial/bezel Rolex dive watch at 40mm, you can't lose with that combo.

The sub is King and you can never go wrong with a sub.

No wrong choice here.
