How do you tuck your NATO strap on a Rolex or Tudor?

Age old question that has been pondered by the befuddled WIS for Eons...or the last hour since I thought of it but definitely for a good period of time!

Do you fold the excess strap in towards the watch?



Do you fold the excess strap out and tucked in?



Do you fold the excess around the first keeper and tuck into the second?



Let us give a preponderance of contemplation and debate it like the sages of yonder years!

So, how saith you all?

Option 1 - I tuck it in towards the inside. It’s bundlesome enough without flipping the excess back towards the outside world.

I don't care for the folded bulky look so I cut the strap so the end just goes past the last bar.

I just use a different method which negates any folding of the strap, I also find it much more comfortable as it only puts one thickness of strap under the watch.

I bought a nato strap once just for shits n giggles. The huge hunk of bulk on one side of the wrist looked so unsightly/ugly/stupid that I threw out the strap immediately lol. Probably just should have tried this method.

I bought a new nato just yesterday and ran into a situation where the only good option I had was to cut it down. Took of about an inch and it's perfect now.

Have a different strap that easily tucks in like your third option and looks fine like that.

I tucked mine right back into the drawer, where they sit unused, not making my watches wear any larger than they need to be.

Any NATO strap for me is a non-starter.

My Tudor nato strap is the perfect length and doesn’t require any tucking! Highest quality straps in the industry, it’s a shame they no longer include them with the steel or leather bracelets.

This is why the Tudor Nato is soooooooo much better than the standard ones. Nothing to tuck, yet is has the security of still holding the watch if a spring bar fails.

...and no goofy looking fold at 12 o'clock

If it's good enough for Bond, it's a winner to me. Not to mention in real world diving, it will save the loss of a very expensive watch if a spring bar failed.







Even modern Bond's like a NATO!

No offense David. In real world diving, divers wear actual tools. They’re called dive computers. Also the only real world backup to a dive computer is another dive computer. I dive with a Rolex because I am not leaving it on the boat. I have 2 dive computers with me on all dives. 1 on my wrist, and one on the BCD. I am sure that there may be divers on here who remember a time when watches and algorithms were used (Peter @ Padi comes to mind) but in modern times, I would much rather keep things simple and focus on not drowning instead of doing math nitro drunk at 30m

That being said. NATO’s are a great alternative for people who like them and Sean definitely wore them well

Well, from someone who is also a diver I wasn't implying a dive computer ( or two) wouldn’t be a primary tool only that a NATO strap offered a benefit over a bracelet if used in diving to secure ones watch in case if a spring bar failure.

While I use a dive computer as well, I also have always dove with a watch as my back up. I guess I’m old school and in the same generation as Padi. Its just something I have always done.

You are correct in that regard 100%. A NATO would keep the watch on your wrist if one spring bar failed.

It’s awesome that you guys were trained that way and are used to it. All of my instructors from OW to AOW and now RD all insist on simplicity of dive computers. Maybe I should learn and practice algorithms anyway just for knowledge

Not to be contrary but Sean is wearing a single nylon strap not the much later iteration of "G10" from the early seventies!

The NATOs that need to get tucked are just an eye sore for me. If I were to ever get a NATO, it would need to be one without excess or something like an Erika where it isn’t very noticeable.

I usually cut my NATO'S and make one pieces, but I have put plastic buckles from paracord bracelets and backpacks. I hate when the nylon starts to wear and tear from the metal buckle..
