Question about taking watch to Rolex dealer

Hi all,

So I'm about to buy a used Datejust, and the owner told me we could go to a Rolex dealer to verify authenticity. But I assume you can't just walk in and have them take a look at the watch, right?

How does this usually go?

If the entire "authentication" process is a salesman looking at it and nodding his head, it's only slightly above worthless.

If there is a watchmaker on staff, and you are willing to pay for his services, you will likely get a very good review.

It like what Larry said - with one additional task. You need to make an appointment in advance if you hope for a watchmaker at the AD to drop what he is doing to open the watch you wish to buy.

Some ADs don’t have any on staff so it falls to dumb luck if an SA is knowledgeable enough.

Yep, that makes sense, thank you for your advice. I will call in first to see if someone is available. Oh and another question if I may: I've heard you can call Rolex and provide the SN to see if it's listed as stolen?

No, Rolex will not tell you if it is stolen over the phone.

If you physically take a watch into an RSC and present it for examination, they will tell you if it is not stolen, but they will keep it if it is stolen, and notify the authority that made the report.

I've done this in the past, they checked the authenticity of a Tudor Sub, also a watchmaker took a look at it.
There was no cost involved and it was a nice communication with a free coffee.
