Icon3 A sure sign you have a good watch collection.

Over the years I found a common issue with advanced watch collectors and their collection. What’s the perfect watch collection? or “How do I know if my collection is complete”...etc....

It all boils down to this very frustrating but very common issue a WIS must face each day.

...”If you maintain a constant struggle to pick which watch to wear out of your collection for the day, you have a good watch collection”.
Everyone goes through honeymoon stages and that new particular watch is their instant favorite for a while. Once the dust settles and your newest watch has to now compete with the veterans in your collection will the fun really begin. When your watch’s tug at you in different ways and strengths, your collection is probably dialed in to your taste and lifestyle.

If you wake up and look at your collection and struggle to pick the watch for the day or you pick the watch and half way through the day feel guilty you want to wear a different one out of your collection, your collection is damn near perfect.

At that point it is time to change watches for the day. I do it all the time.

Changing watches part way through the day is fine if you work from home - bit difficult if you got an hours commute !

Well said. If you instantly reach for one or two pieces in the collection most of the time, it becomes clear which should stay and which can be moved on.

But Mystro, what if your approach to wearing watches is regimented and you rotate watches equally and weekly?

That’s just wrong on so many levels. Each watch has a voice and gives its best “Pick me” argument each day for you to anguish over.
It’s about feel, mood and the activities you thing you have planned for the day. I change watches 1/2 way through the day a lot.

This post also addresses the difficulties of picking a vacation watch as most of us only want to take one watch for security reasons and perhaps bond and make memories with just that one watch. When I come home from vacation and all my other watches stare at me from the winders as if to say...”Where the hell were you?”

Timely post as I ponder the very thought.

Though Not sure if It will be able to help me resolve my quest?

I would add my personal view, each watch in the collection should be desirable as a daily wear And be satisfying to wear for an extended period (~a week). If I wear a watch for a single day or less, that is a good indicator the watch may be moving on.

The exception would be a watch with a dedicated duty, for example my explorer II, i may not wear it day today but if I am traveling, it is on my wrist and perfect for the task.

This is true. Comfort on the wrist also plays a big roll in loving a watch. You could admire a watch but if it isn’t comfortable on the wrist, I’m not sure you can ever bond with it? This becomes more obvious in bigger collections when a watch looks killer but also wears so comfortable you don’t want to take it off. This is what picks my “Vacation watch”. I have owned enough beautiful watch’s that look great but don’t feel great on the wrist. You will put up with it in the honeymoon phase but deep down I know if I can’t get it to be more comfortable, it’s moving out of my collection.

It's easier for me to pick a watch to wear.
But it's impossible for me to chose which bike to ride.
I love them all (Skyway TA, Hutch TrickStar, SE PK Rippers)

Wow, that brings me back. Back in the 80s I custom built a Haro Master Freestyler in neon green. It was at my parents house until somewhere in the 2000s, but I think my mom finally put it out in the trash. I should show her what they go for on eBay these days!

Your Mom throwing it in the trash is the reason they are soo expensive today. :)

F’ing great bikes man! In the 80’s I would have killed for any one of those. My older brother handed me down his Hutch TrackStar which I then tried to convert to a freestyle bike, but I always wanted the real deal - a TrickStar or a Haro Master.

I remember Woody Itson on his Trick Star! I was a fan of Martin Aparijo on his GT Pro World Tour. I had an '85 Pro Performer in white with hot pink Peregrine mags......heaven!

This is very true. I now have 3 that I’m completely satisfied with and struggle to decide between. That was never the case in my brief wearing of the YM, Hulk, Explorer - I’d always return to the Sub. Now it’s between Sub, CHNR, and 16710 and I really have no interest in any other models. (Ok maybe the new BLNR but I think the 16710 on jubilee satisfied that itch)

LOL, this...

I find myself searching for a traditional dress watch (thin with a leather strap) when I have not worn a sport coat in a year or a tie in 5 years.

time to pump the brakes.

This is exactly how I feel right now. I recently contributed to another thread where I was saying that I feel like my collection might be too big because I can’t seem to give each piece enough wrist time. I do feel guilty about this. However, I absolutely cannot decide on anything to let go. I have a very good reason why I have to keep each one. I’m actually way more likely to decide I need just one more.
