Would Rolex know the age of my watch?

Hi,

Was just looking at some pre owned Rolex watches and seen some modern watches such as BLNR, Two tone sub etc that were advertised as no paperwork (I have no intention of buying either)

As the serial numbers are randomly generated if I was to take one of these watches into Rolex without paperwork how would they know if it is a 2012 watch or a 2018/2019/2020 watch? My understanding is that Rolex do not keep archives of sold watches so would the responsibility be on the customer to provide warranty card to prove the birth year of the watch?

My DJ36 didn't come with papers and was sold as age unknown, random serial number so 2010/11 onwards, it was a great price and condition compared to others I had looked at so bit the bullet and purchased it. I called into a local AD and asked could they verify the age and was told no, however they did say if it were to be sent into RSC with an accompanying letter asking to confirm original sales date they might do it, as far as he was aware they do have access to that info, whether they choose to divulge is another matter.

Yes if you bring your watch into a Rolex service center, they can tell the age and date of purchase based on the serial number that is engraved on the watch itself.

This is the correct answer. However you must bring it to them they wont tell you anything over the phone or computer.

The date of sale will be known if the AD swipes the warranty card during the fulfillment process. This step gets murky if a grey marketer is getting watches through a middleman distribution channel.

Rolex will also know when the watch was produced at the factory, when it was shipped to the distributor channel and when that channel shipped it to the AD.

It can be known when the watch is taken to a Rolex Service center.

Rolex SC can tell you everything. When it was manufactured, when/where it was sold etc. if they actually provide this info I have no idea, but do they know? Yes. They’re the manufacturers and control the supply meticulously.
