Throw a poll and I suspect most will prefer a 40mm sub to a 42mm steroids-boosted so-2020 diver.

They do its called the SD43...smart ass aside. I think that was their intention with the new SD release a nice middle ground for someone wanting a larger watch without the size of the DSSD. Course Rolex could surprise us all and release a larger sub, but would be really surprised if they did.

They do, it’s called the SubC and SubC Date. With the maxi dial and super case wears like a 42 mm.

I think you'll find it's popularity is more to do with the other aspects of the Rolex brand. If they manufactured a 40 and a 42 I'm not sure the original would attract the attention it does. Think about the datejust and OP range for example. The larger models are the one's people want.

I'm just basing my thoughts on supply and demand rather than the range available. You will often see the smaller watches in AD display cabinets whereas the larger sizes are either pre-sold or out of sight.

A Seiko turtle SRP773 might fill your void. There’s a waiting list for a classic, traditional 40mm SS Submariner. So it must be a desirable size watch.

It’s time for rolex to change. Baby boomers and gen x were good customers, but times goes by. Millenials ar dominating the market now, they want huge submariner - a statement watch. They play games, watch e-sporta and want something new, not a small grandpas clock
