Is Rolex Haute Horology?

The "Fondation De La Haute Horlogerie" deems it so and places it in the same company as: A.Lange & Söhne, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron Constantin et al.

here's a link: http://www.hauteHorlogerie.org/en/pl...ing-perimeter/

Thoughts?

"Is Rolex Haute Horology?"

To me that would be a bit of a stretch.

I think anyone that's seen both a Rolex movement and a Lange & Sohne movement in the flesh can attest that they just simply aren't in the same class. Lange & Sohne make some of the most unbelievable watches out there, in my opinion. I've had a few lengthy conversations with a great guy that works at WestTime Jewelers in Beverly Hills, and he told me that a lot of people are saying that within the next four to five years, Lange & Sohne will trump Patek Phillipe as the "ultimate watch maker". Rolex just isn't on the same level.

That being said, I would take a Rolex 6263 Daytona over a Lange 1 any day of the week, but if we're comparing from a quality and craftsmanship standpoint, I think it's almost not a fair comparison. Only my opinion. :)

Matt,

I have to agree with you. I just fondled my first Lange & Sohne this week in Santa Fe. It was awesome in every way. I was able to handle the 18K gold Lange 1 on a leather strap. I couldn't believe how wonderful the fit and finish was and came a hair's breath from buying it for 14K.

I thought so, but decided on the TT Blusey as I am an amateur and much into Rolexes at this time.

David still has it at World Class Watches in Santa Fe. It was a complete package and was gorgeous!

If I hadn't lost my digital camera I would have photos of it. It was a lovely timepiece and beautiful in every way.

To me 'Haute Horology' isn't really about functionality in the real world, but intricacy and novelty.

To me quality is found in such things as:
Simplicity of design;
Robustness of design;
Accuracy under real world conditions;
Reliability;
Timeless classical beauty.

That's why to me it matters little if Rolex is or is not "Haute Horology".

Rolex seems to fit all the criteria...and you can take that to the bank

Can you dive with that other high-end crap? No, because those other companies make jewelry, not functional equipment.

Just my 2c

I'm afraid this is just plain wrong.

You can certainly dive with JLC's Compressor line, Blancpain's Fifty Fathoms, Ulysse Nardin's Marine Diver, as well as Audemars Piguet's Offshore Scuba. There are others.

Also, why the need to refer to the other high-end watches as "high-end crap"? If you don't know anything about these other companies, that's fine; but please don't say they only make "jewelry, not functional equipment".

From the OP's initial post:

"places it in the same company as: A.Lange & Söhne, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron Constantin"

I didn't see JLC or Blancpain in the list. Maybe it was listed in the link, but I didn't waste my time reading it.

I actually know quite a bit about several of the companies listed. The UN Maxi-marine diver is such a blingy watch, I would be worried that a barracuda would take off my arm just to get it. That one is the closest to a real diver from the OP's list though. UN has gone down the road of jewelry with their rose gold and other precious metals. Really, it is not made for diving.

In order to be considered a real diver, a watch needs a functional bezel so that the diver can keep track of their bottom time. (I would guess you already know this)

Really, do you think that this looks like a functional dive-watch really made for diving????

If you in fact know "quite a bit about several of the companies listed", then there really was no need for your remark about them not producing functional watches.

As for the Offshore Scuba, I'll assume that you know there is a functional and rotatable internal bezel. Whether or not it's the best or most practical diver's watch is beside the point. Fact is, it can be used for diving.

Anyway, many divers use a dive computer as well.

No. Rolex is Prêt-à-Porter Horology. Which is a good thing.

As for "quality" of movements - I appreciate decorations, but the function *has* to be there. If a given fancy movement cannot be regulated to exceed the accuracy of, say, a 3186, it cannot rightly be described as better-made or better-finished. Bearing surfaces, gear profiles, and other mechanical tolerances that most people can't see constitute finishing and are intrinsic to the "quality" of the movement.

A fairly ignorant post.

Pretty downright stupid.

And the back up isn't much better either.

No one in their right mind would expect a true haute horlogerie piece to be a dive watch. It simply isn't a valid comparison, therefore the point of this post, is well, quite retaliatory and irrational with regards to the original post.
