Best beater watch?

Before I just go buy a G shock or whatever similar plastic/rubber low priced watch, is there some cool inexpensive thing I should be looking at? Something akin to a good old trail truck with lockers rather than a Porsche GTR3?

I don't wear my watches when I'm wrenching on the cars, camping, doing yardwork, mountain biking, etc etc etc. But I'd like to wear one. I almost don't care about any particular features or complications, except maybe it would be cool to have a chronograph. Oh and it should be legible.

Can't beat a gshock for high impact activities IMO.

Just to be clear, when I'm doing certain activities, my clothes, shoes, gloves, whatever get damaged. I've messed up a couple watches already (smashed crystal, dented case seal leading to water damage). This was way back before I actually took an interest in collecting nice watches.

I wear my 114060 all the time, for everything. It's a watch, not a Ming vase. It's repairable after all, and seeing as I've waited a lifetime to own it, I'm not taking it off.

Wore mine solid since 2016 but then developed a passion/interest in all watches and not just Rolex and I'm currently sporting a Seiko SARB035 and loving it

This Turtle has become one of my favorite mods. I recently filed OEM SKX end links to fit the turtle on a super jubilee bracelet and absolutely loving this combo.

Yes, the super jubilee is aftermarket, bought used on WUS for an SKX. But the end links didn't fit my SKX for some reason. My Macgyver mind took over and decided to see if I could use OEM end links, which I really prefer over the bucktoothed end links found on solid jubilees. And I was able to make it work.

Not sure of the maker but the last link [closest to the end link] has a screw attachment which allowed me to use the OEM end links. Not sure if other aftermarket super jubilees [like Strapcode] are the same.

Clever! I see where you did that. And there's just a slight dip, like a little smile that shows of a hint of the case in between the lugs. It's not a straight fit. Very cool! Nice work

It's a bummer that people just blow off G-Shocks. The GWM5610-1 is the quintessential "beater" for the money @ $95.00. Solar and Multiband. You'll never need to change the time or battery. It'll laugh at whatever you try to toss at it.

The quintessential mechanical beater is the SKX on OEM Jubilee. You can get under $300.00. Maybe go a tad larger for the SRP777 Turtle with hacking and hand winding. Also under $300.00. Both are classics and workhorses.

Of course, just my opinion! (My SRP777 is out for modding, so here is his cousin at the end, another SRP but with blue that received patina treatment).

I wear a VC Overseas As an everyday watch and it’s taking the eventual beating quite gracefully, but I have to concur with the majority here, the black Sub is likely the quintessential beater watch. Closest I got to that is a black GMTIIC, which has seen about 8 years of heavy wear before bowing to the VC. And boy does it look better now than it ever did when it was new. That one really knows how to wear its scars with pride.

I have used an IWC Mark XV as a beater for almost 20 years now. Work on the car or bike, checking a plane or helicopter, cycling, hiking, sailing, you name it. After all those years I still like its looks, it offers excellent legibility, and the pyramid bracelet is very comfortable too, more so than some other bracelets that get lots of praise for their comfort such as that of the Patek 5711.

That term, “beater”, has so much ambiguity associated with it.

On the one hand, a lot depends on who/what you plan on beating with it.

On the other, will it be underwater a lot?

I’d say in both instances, something with a lot of heft and sturdy metal. Like a DSSD.

Hamilton Khaki field watches might be of interest. Simple, legible, and a fairly inexpensive starting point for the range of models. Choice of movements, a newer one of which has an 80-hr power reserve. They're cool.
