Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November

The way things are looking about us heading home to our winter place in Sri Lanka has given me thoughts of doing a road trip to South America for some cycling and sun in November. They are unrestricted in the travel from States at the moment and just need to get out.

Anyone here done Rio as a cycling or just a fun place to do a bit of birding and snap a few phone pics..?

I'd wait a little longer. We all want to travel, see the world and explore different cultures, but we just have to wait a little longer.

Visited Rio many times. The virus will be only part of the problem. No cycling culture and easy to wander into the wrong place at the wrong time.

I wouldn't be rushing off anywhere even if I could, no matter how much I "needed" to. Why put yourself and others at risk - especially if traveling onwards to a country that is much less impacted by C-19? Brazil is not a safe place to visit, even without the added stresses and complications of C-19.

I have two friends from Brazil. The way they talk about their country, you could think they hate it. Well they do, they hate the crime it has.

The stories they have told me will stop me from ever visiting.

I’m an avid road cyclist and I lived in Rio for a number of years.

Go to RdJ for the food, the people, the natural beauty, the history and the beaches. It’s a wonderful place — except for COVID threats — and I can’t wait to go back. *Do Not* let people who’ve never lived there scare you off with something they heard from a friend.

Recently one of my friends from Nigeria told me he would never come to the US because of all the dangerous riots, police brutality, and hurricanes. Sometimes the headline news undercuts the actual situation even in places that are perfectly safe.

Having said this....do not go to RdJ for the cycling, healthcare, or relaxing drives. That’s not what this city is good at, and if you try it, you will suffer :)

Love this post. I'd only disagree on the last part. Tijuca forest is in the heart of Rio and it's a fantastic place for cicling. These pics were taken there while biking in the morning.

I love Tijuca. Climbed Pedro da Gavea with my father, foolishly jumped off Pedro Bonita in a dodgy delta wing, and spent many many hours with my kids at Parque Lage and on Corcovado hikes.

I’m always amazed about how few residents of RdJ were into hiking and camping, preferring instead the beaches...we basically lived in the woods. What a pristine national treasure.

In terms of biking...the roads were kind of hostile to my 21mm road tires. Wish I had my CX or MTB and it would have been a cycling paradise...except for the drivers :)

As difficult as it might be, I would try my best to make the most of things locally until it's a bit safer to do this. Albeit tempting to get away there's a high probability it'll bring more stress than pleasure for several reasons.

I can't wait for this all to pass and for things to be normal again.

just have the itch to do something big and bold like I am known for however do not want to risk tons for the short term. My heart is in Sri Lanka but still they do not want any foreign travel only having a total of 13 deaths from the virus. If I could have pulled off just staying when we left early June we could still be there with no problems. 32F this am while on my 25 mile bike ride caused me to curse constantly..:)

I'm right there with ya, buddy. Words can't describe how hard it's been for now at 6 (going on 7) months without lane swim. Even when the outdoor pools opened up in the summer their "plan" didn't exactly instill confidence in me.

I know how much cycling and those adventures mean to you so it's understandable how you're feeling. The only bright side to all of this will be the first time you get back to it in either Brazil or Sri Lanka . I bet it'll be the best time cycling you've ever had!

I'm from Rio so I think I can help. I don't live there anymore because I don't like to live in big cities but my mother, my brother and my friends live there. I used to go once a month at least but I have not visited my family since march due to Covid and I think that means something. Wait a bit more so you can enjoy this beautiful city.

After reading so much stupidity about my country , I just have to say that I am in NY. Number of COVID cases and riots in your streets does not differ a lot from what we see in Rio and Sao Paulo.
Won't talk about riots in USA. Your CBP officer when I arrived told me to take care about the streets...
BreguetRolex, if you need to be placed in contact with some friends I have in rio, DM me. I am a road cyclist, so my friends in rio are more tied to asphalt than mud.
If deciding going to SP, things are different and I can tell you to come with US.
