Rolex AD got rid of waitlist

I went with my girlfriend to the Rolex AD where I happened to put my name on the waitlist circa 2017 for a GMT or Sub as a first watch, as she is looking for a DJ.

I long since gave up on ever hearing back, but asked out of curiosity as I was already there, if they could look up my name or phone number to see where I am currently on the list.

Was told without looking they no longer have a wait list and that I would need to buy some other watches first before I could buy one.

Apparently, Tourneau purchased this AD since my last visit and the waitlist was thrown into the trash bin.

They are a Rolex only AD at a nearby mall so I walk by their store often. I did pop in a few other times way back then. I ended up visiting 5 or 6 other Rolex ADs while on business and personal travel that year but never got to see even a single Sub so eventually I moved on.

So if you ‘popped in a few other times’ why didn’t you ask the AD ‘where’s my watch?’

And if you have now ‘moved on’ why now make a fuss about the AD not having your details?

I have to ask did you really want that watch because your actions suggest that you didn’t.

The few other times were all way back then in relatively close proximity when I was just starting my watch journey. Whenever I popped in -- I walk by their store front all the time at the mall -- they never had anything for me to see, so I stopped going.

I did want it back then. I had read about the Sub due to the Bond connection. The GMTs I liked simply because I traveled internationally frequently. I thought I would get to try them both on and pick one. Had no idea they would be hard to get.

No fuss at all now, just sharing what I learned, which many seem to have already known, that the wait lists are no more, at least at that AD.

In hindsight, they did me a huge favor, because I ended up going deeper down the rabbit hole, read about Breguet and George Daniels, and for good or bad, got hooked on watches, which was how I ended up getting my first three watches actually from Omega and Breguet (the third was a Titanium PO).

LOL.

A few years ago I was in the AD buying some jewelry, and I mentioned the Pepsi wait list, asking how far up I had moved (I was in position #5 last I asked). He brings up a spreadsheet and looks at it and says, "oh".

Seems that they had redone the waitlist, and I fell off. Apparently the list name changed from "waiting for a Rolex" to "Our Favorite Whales".

And no, buying a few hundred dollars worth of jewelry annually apparently does not qualify me as a whale, more like a minnow.

Actually, you’re in the “Guppy” category.

Minnow status will be achieved once you spend $10k.

Trout status occurs at $25k.

Shark status occurs at $50k.

Whale status begins at $100k.

But look at the bright side, at least you’re not a first time customer … you know, plankton status.

"We don't have wait lists" usually means "we don't intend to sell you a Rolex". I suspect that if you visited a few times a year, bought some stuff, got to know them a bit and established a rapport, the existence of a wait list might be revealed to you. Whether or not you would be put on it would remain to be seen.

My AD doesn't behave like this. We visit several times a year for purchases (usually nothing ultra expensive and often discounted) and have been doing so for over 20 years. This doesn't necessarily put us miles in front of a first time cold caller, but it counts for something.

The day I have to form a disingenuous relationship with AN AD is the day I have sold my soul to however.

No sh*t. My relationship goes like this: I see the watch I want, I present legal tender, I pay MSRP and I walk out with product.

Anything else is something besides a “relationship.”

Agree 100%. Imagine if we needed to establish this fake relationship with every sales person, damn, buying a pair of jeans would be a pain in the ass.

In the same league as the Hermes Birkin/Kelly wannabe crowd. When is this going to end?

I enjoy my relationship with my AD. Nice people who just want to sell watches and really wish they had more inventory available. Not sure this is disingenuous.

He told you to buy other jewelry/watches first before he could sell you a Rolex? I hope you told him where to shove it. If you buy into this strategy you might as well get ripped off at a grey dealer, you can have your watch tomorrow and not buy jewelry you will never wear.

Yes, they only sell Rolex at this AD; he said the watch I want is a highly desired one, so I'd have to buy some other watches first.. which was odd because they didn't seem to have any watches for sale period, not even women's watches this time.. but I only asked out of curiosity. I would never play that game with any AD either.

Build a relationship means buy other stuff and you'll be considered. The list is imaginary.

Everyone has the choice to then not want that something.

To persist in wanting it despite not being able to obtain it on one’s own terms is the hallmark of foolishness or entitlement.

Pick either one.

Your AD got rid of waitlist not Rolex

There is an official statement from Rolex ( posted here also somewhere ) that adressed shortage and saying that was not their strategy rather demand
Also they mentioned that AD control the distribution at their will.
