What do you do at airport security?

When you have to walk through the metal detectors, do you do anything different since some times your Rolex and your gear goes through the x-ray machine first. Do you worry about it disappearing by the time you go through?

For my photography gear and negative film, I always ask for a hand inspection where they do not put it through the x-ray machine, but I've never ask that for a watch.

I´m relaxed about this. After all it's only an x-ray machine. It´s not a magic device that makes things disappear

I fly all the time to go to work and what not, when I go to the check point anything I'm worried about someone taking I just put it inside my carry on bag.

I dont worry about it disappearing. How ever I dont like the idea of taking it of and putting it in the small plastic tray the offer for watches and jewellery, I'm worried it will get scratched. So I keep it on my arm, or make sure its well protected in my bag.

I went through the San Fran airport security. Wore my Milgauss through the detector. (ack, never had a problem at Seattle Sea Tac before).... The Officer directed me back to place my watch through the treadmill scanner. I placed it in the SMALL plastic box.

It went through with some larger items sandwiching it. Knapsack, carry-on, etc.

After about a minute of standing by the exit to the XRay machine, and other Travellers behidn me grabbing their bags and leaving I finally asked, where the blazes is my watch??! The Officer with the scanner that told me to go back and put my watch through wasn't interested and didn't answer. The Woman standing behind the Xray Monitor screen was dumfounded. Eventually someone other than them checked inside their machine and found the SMALL tray flipped over. He then looked under the metal cranks and tracks and found my watch lying on the tile.


Please, please use a watch pouch travel case, Place in carry-on, or even in zippered pocket. Do not use these small plastic trays!!

I travel overseas to work, regularly, I cannot remember the last time I was asked to remove my watch, if I am not asked I would NEVER take it off voluntarily....it's been mentioned on here a few times that a watch is unlikely to set off airport detectors, even if it did the security staff there would just give you the once over with the magic wand....when it beeped over your watch then they know the cause....no big deal.....betwen Baku (Azerbaijan) where I work and Newcastle UK my final airport I have to go through 5 detectors.....they never trigger with my watch and I am never asked to remove it....my halfway house airport is London Heathrow, saying the security there is mega has to be the understatement of the century....

Ha! I got the wand at the airport in Erie, PA, and it went off because of the aluminum foil on the Wrigleys gum in my pocket.

Of course the airfield is named 'TOM RIDGE FIELD', Pennsylvania's Governor,

Have to agree travelled world wide but mostly far east middle east, never ever had any problem with any watch Rolex or others at any airport Xray machine.

I always leave whatever watch Im wearing on. It never sets off the machine...at least in Vegas, LAX, JFK, John Wayne, Seattle, Chicago, Sioux Falls, Honolulu...

The main reason I leave it on is so that it doesn't get lost. I've heard too many stories.

I heard once that the watch can become magnetized by passing through the arch too often (from a watchmaker), he said it's better to stow the watch and send it through the bag "tunnel"

I bet the guys who work these security checkpoints and machines see so many Rolex and other brands (both real and fake) that it does not bother them.

Whenever I've handed mine over, they never seem to bat aneyelash!!!!

From the majority of messages posted lately, it seems the only people out there who are worked up about wearing Rolex are those who are wearing Rolex.

Precisely Jim most are just myths like Xray machine will damage, magnetise the movement etc.And yes the guys at airport security could not give a toss what watch it is.All they want is to get the passengers and must be millions of Rolex or any other watches yearly world wide though quickly and securely.

I've never had a problem with my watch setting off the metal detector at the airport. But sometimes I will slip the watch in my pocket so that Ranger Rick won't ask me to remove it and put it in the tray.

i always put my watch in the pocket of a jacket and through the x-ray, do not want to draw unneccessary attention
besides they warn

If you put it in your jacket pocket couldn't the fluff in there scratch the soft Stainless Steel the watch case is made from?

I put in on the cushion before I put it in the pocket. That way I can scratch it and stretch the band.

I try to put a cloth soaked in water softner water in my pocket first so I can get some moisture inside the case too!

Me i just put it inside my coffee..in this way i can test its durability for caffine..... Seriously..whats the big deal if you have to take off your watch on airport security??? I mean you dont complaint when they ask you to take of your shoes and belt...when shoes is made of leather or rubber....lets make it easy just take it off and wear it again when you pass by security..Period..

I always walk right through wearing it - never goes off.

Strangely, my sons belt buckle (which is much smaller) sets it off.

I have no problem with security whatsoever, after all it is for our own good.
i do have a problem with taking off my very expensive watch in a BUSY area and putting it in a plastic box that goes into a conveyor belt and comes out 20 feet away in a place i cannot see, while the security guard is running me up and down with that portable doohickey. This happened to me in a very busy terminal and i was really nervous.

I just go thru, never a problem. Last week my Son and I were going thru La Guardia and they asked him to take his Breitling off, that's the first I've ever seen anyone asked.

I have never had an issue with my photography gear...

However, if you are a traveler, and you do want to take off your watch.. Put it in one of these nice pouches, then in the zipper comartment of your carryon....

I worked in Paris for the last 6 months of 2003.....travelled home every other weekend, never got asked to take off my DJ or DD once....maybe they tightened security.....no idea why they make you remove your watch.....seems crazy to me

I usually just leave it on, I don't recall ever being asked to take off a watch before.
