The Masters and Dad

The Masters Tournament was me and my dad’s tournament. We always seemed to watch it together on the weekend. It was nothing planned, for some reason, I just always happened to be in Concord on those weekends from Tahoe. Dad’s been gone for over 30 years, but I always think extra about him during the Masters.

I came across this article written by someone who had the same relationship with the Masters with his dad; and it is incredibly poignant. So . . . if I were in the advice giving business, what I’d tell you is this, if your dad is still alive, call him. Don’t text him, call him. If you live close by, go see him and tell him you love him. Not because it’s the Easter Weekend, or even The Masters, but just because Father Time always wins, and you may not get another chance.

Hi David. Thanks for your post, and the words of wisdom. I hadn’t read that piece before and was moved by it. Some beautiful descriptions of Augusta National too.

Stay well.

Nice post David.

While I'm not a big fan of watching sports on TV I do realize for a lot of people, especially men/boys it's a great bonding experience. Men for some reason are not real good at expressing their feelings but the togetherness of shared sports can be a silent bond.

I think I read Ram Dass say in one of his articles that as his dad was aging he used to go over at least once a week and play checkers with him. It was years later that they discovered that neither one of them liked checkers. Just was, as he stated, a way to "make love" with his father.

Thanks for the post OP! I also share a bond to sports with my dad and he likes to tell me stories of the trip he took to Augusta for the Masters in the late 70’s. I can’t remember the year but I’ll have him refresh my memory when I give him a call tomorrow (it’s really late here) I appreciate the read and the reminder of what really matters in life.
