Is this DD40 too big?

Been looking at buying a Day-Date but constantly flipping between 36mm and 40mmm as I feel I have small wrists. Managed to try on this beauty at an AD (unfortunately already spoken for). Any comments on if it is too big for my wrist?

Seems like you have quite the flat wrist buuuuut I personally do find it too big for you.


Cannot beat the 36 for wearability(keep in mind thag this is a lot added weight compared to you4 usual stainless Rolex) , form and presence.

The reason it’s a problem for so many people is that the 40mm is not necessarily big on anyone. It’s just “bigger” than the 36mm. In that photo you provided, I think a 36mm would look better on you.

So nice.. 118209 looks great on you. Love it. 36 wears very comfortably on my 7" wrist as well.

Take a picture in front of a mirror and it will give you a better idea. Wrist shots often look make your wrists look smaller.

That said, the lugs are borderline overhanging your wrists so I suspect a 36mm would fit better.

Yes, or take a picture like this. This is not a traditional wrist shot. The camera was positioned about 3 foot away. I sat the camera down on my desk and used the timer feature.

Thanks for the input everyone! Yes I unfortunately do have tiny flat wrists, but at 6’4 I dont feel like a Sub or DJ41 is too big for my frame. Here is another shot! I haven't been able to find a DD36 to try on yet but I have tried a 36mm DJ and it felt smaller than I thought it would

No matter whether the photo is taken this way or that way, the lugs are protruding, and therefore I would say 40mm is not a good fit

There’s more to it than just doing a wrist shot.
Full mirror shots are much better to determine watch to body ratio by seeing hands arms torso etc along with the watch.
The photo you shared doesn’t help much.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the science or looking in the mirror to see how the watch looks in relationship with you amd your body size, most of the time the wristshot pov is what we will see and if that feel/looks big or small, that's not a good place to be.

Yes, the DD36 has already huge wrist presence because of the President bracelet.
I don’t know which genius decided to blow it up but the 40 is just too big for most of us.

Very helpful all! Yes have to concur on the size just not looking 100% was always my thought but wanted to confirm as I don’t think its too big but do concur that the 36mm will probably fit just that much better! Going to try and scout around to see if I can find a 36mm to try on before fully pulling the trigger! Will update with pics when I do ��

A good call IMO. As others have said, the lugs are borderline overhanging the sides of your wrist (at least in that picture) and that's the hard-stop as far as I'm concerned. 36mm will suit you better I think.

Yes. Seems like 38mm would work better for most people.

Hard to judge by pictures. But I’d say you’re right on the verge of too big, just on wrist proportions.
BUT…. if you’re 6’4”, I’d say to take a few wrist shots from far away, and get people’s opinion in real time. It’s not JUST the wrist circumference that matters.

I went through this when purchasing my DJ. I'm used to wearing divers ranging from 39-42mm on my 6.75" wrist, and a friend's 36mm Explorer I always looked small too me, so I went with the DJ41.

Afterwards, I found the popular opinion on the forums was to stick with the DJ36. Classic size, always looks good regardless of wrist size, etc. I second-guessed myself for months before ultimately deciding that I really like my DJ41. Yes, it looks like a serving platter in close-up wrist pics, but when seen from the perspective of the entire arm/body I think it looks great.

I've since stopped overthinking it...much less stressful than being a perpetual malcontent. :-)

Try them both on, and like others have said, do not only consider close-up wrist shots. Above all, buy what YOU like!

Agreed. I am 6'4" (and slim), and although my wrist is 7.25 to 7.5, watches generally look smaller on me in the context of the rest of me!

A 40mm Sub would look fine

The DD is a bit more elegant, so if you don’t have the wrist for it, it looks out of place. This is the case for you, go 36. Which is better as you’ll have less of a wait.

I have the exact same problem, as someone with a small wrist. Sadly I feel the DD40 is just too big for me, something about the fluted bezel and the overall "loudness" of this watch further expand its wrist presence. I would opt for DD36, but personally I wish the DD36 had more dial options like the DD40 offers.
