5712/1A Buying advice needed

Hey PP historians, experts and fellow nerds

I have decided to bite the bullet on a 5712/1A after my AD lost their relationship over a year ago I have not been able to get my foot in with any of the salons. I honestly don't see myself building a relationship with them let alone in the timeframe before this could get discontinued.

So, I am somewhat agnostic to age, I know early early models came in a different box, I dont want that as it seems to age poorly. I don't exactly remember when they switched from screws to pins but I would need to watch Tim Mosso he keeps mentioning it, only reason that could be relevant is adding the new style folding clasp. Spoke to PP yesterday and they said they don't yet sell it. Obviously looking for ones in good shape and not over polished.

Question: Do you have any sage advice that is particular to Patek and the model? Not thinking of buy the seller type general things, more super specific things to look for regarding the model.

Thank you

Buy brand new with new clasp. That’s the only way to do it for a watch that expensive

IMHO a clasp isn't worth 20-30k extra. Id rather get whatever is in good shape and unpolished

Did all the 5712's get the new clasp with micro also? Or was there a period where it was just the new locking mechanism? The price difference is drastic for the new clasp.

My 2 cents: new clasp is overrated, I much prefer the older style but agree buy best condition and newest year that fits your budget

As far as pins vs screws, to my own surprise I love the Patek pin system for their bracelets now, versus fudging up the screws or potentially stripping them

Agree with the point in general , just wonder what you dislike about the new Clasp ? I don’t think it’s worth 20-30k extra on the secondary, But inmo it’s excellent

I’ll comment again to follow up from my first comment. I see people say don’t worry about the new style clasp. My main point is don’t buy a used 5712 if you’re going to spend $80,000 plus. As long as it’s unworn and new, any year watch would be a great watch

80k USD wont buy you a new one thats for sure. 110-150k USD seems to be the range that those are being offered in. Would love a new one but I just dont think its worth that much despite being my grail

I think the lowest I saw was an early year box and papers for 81 on C24. I don't see why you would only buy one new. I would daily it and not care about scratches etc.

Does the new clasp have the micro-adjust or just the double deployant (can be opened either way vs the one way on the old clasp)?

The new clasp without micro adjustment was presented in 2018 (5740 and 5968A).
The new clasp with micro adjustment was presented on October 2022 (5712/1R, 5811G, 5990/1A).

Usually, as years go by, the new features (like a caliber update) finally get applied to older references. It seems the 5712/1A now receives the clasp + micro adjustment. Did some 5712/1A had time to receive the first version (without micro adjustment) between 2018 and 2022? I don't know. Salnuaimi says just above that his 5712/1A had this "in-between" version.

Hi Salnuaimi, thanks for the update, it's good to know :) The 5726 is mentioned with the micro adjustment system on the official site so it should have switched by now. The 5726 -014 (blue) was released in Basel 2019 (1 year after the new buckle without adjustment was released). The micro adjustment came in 2022 so I guess yours is one of the rare that came with the new buckle without adjustment.

Hi OP I’m in a very similar situation as you, I’m thinking to get a 5712 from the grey market too, pref a mint preown between 2020-2022 and was wondering what are the upgrades along the way esp with the dial colour.

I know the clasp is an upgrade since 2022, but what about the dial colour? I know it used to be grey/black for the leather strap versions and now is blue/grey? Has this blue/grey been consistent over the years till now? Coz it seems the blue and the blue on 5726 is different?

Appreciate any inputs from the floor thanks guys

I believe the 5712/1A has gone through changes to its dial colour, it is my understanding that the older ones were "less" blue. They were still blue but the new ones are "more" blue...I have not been able to side by side compare and dont know what yer this happened.
