I use shoe trees in all my leather shoes/boots. For sneakers, I fill the shoe with white tissue paper. It helps to keep their shape and absorb moisture after use.

For all leather shoes and boots (from loafers and chukkas, to dress shoes and heritage ‘work boots’). But not for sneakers. Cedar shoe trees. Helps keep shape and stops the inner lining from stinking and breaking down from moisture. Rotating wear also helps with this.

Yes for shoes and boots made of leather. Natural wood, lasted, no finish (natural wood absorbs moisture, finished wood and plastic only provides structure). My sneakers are all synthetic. For leather sneakers I would consider trees, depending on the quality of the shoes.

I don’t need them as far as I know.

My boots and shoes have strutted toes, heel stiffener and stitchdown construction

Most people don't have lasted trees. So, they aren't keeping the shape with a generic tree. Rather, the number one reason to use a shoe tree is to remove moisture from the leather after wearing. Leather hates water and removing the moisture is good for the shoes.

That's a pretty amazing stat in Canada!

The moisture that the trees absorb is deposited by your feet.

Yes, they do. They grow old gracefully, without getting decrepit and ugly.

Shoe trees inside all my shoes, boots and trainers (you call them “sneakers!).

Wooden ones - which can absorb moisture, keep the shape and remove any odours.

Just not inside sandals :)

All leather boots/shoes I've ever owned has had cider shoe trees resting in them when I am not wearing it. It makes such a big difference with odor and shape of the overall shoe.

Dress shoes, leather boots, & golf shoes. Trees dry out golf shoes quickly and leave them smelling nice.

Many will debate exactly how much a shoe tree will help with perspiration but there is no doubt a shoe tree does help with maintaining the original shape of the shoe or the boot. Once the damage is done a shoe tree can't undo that but it most certainly can help prevent it.

Even if they aren't a perfectly shaped lasted shoe tree it's going to help the shoe or boot from curling up or losing it's shape as long as the shoe tree isn't either too much longer or wider than the shoe itself. Besides most manufactures don't sell lasted shoe trees and some may only sell generic shoe trees. Heck even Edward Green stopped selling lasted shoe trees awhile ago. It was much easier for someone like Gaziano & Girling as they basically used the same last as the basis for the vast majority of their lasts with the exception of the shape of the toe. Unfortunately lasted trees can often become a logistical nightmare.

Personally I let the shoe air out for about 30 minutes before putting a shoe tree in. Leather dress\casual shoes yes, tennis shoes no. However if you have smelly feet they do have products you can put in the sneaker can help.

That and of course rotating shoes and not wearing them two days in a row. Have enough and you can go even longer which further extends the life of a pair of shoes or boots.
