Case polishing vs. case back polishing

Is the high polish finish on the case supposed to match the high polish finish on the ring around the case back? My case back has more of a mirror finish, where my reflection is as if looking in a mirror. The polished sides of the case has more of a verticalized reflection. Is there a reason for this?

Do you mean the distorted reflection on the case sides? Both of the areas you mentioned are high polished, but the shape of the case sides are more curved creating the distorted reflection. Kinda like the mirrors in a kids fun house at the carnival that give a weird reflection of yourself. I think this is what you're referring to?

Yes exactly! Should all case sides have that distorted reflection or only on some references depending on the curve of the case? My GMT master has it, as does 2 of my subs, but my OP and Datejust do not, and I am trying to figure out if its because of incorrect prior polishing or thats just how it is? FWIW, the non distorted reflections are perfect, but they are just not distorted like the fun house mirrors

Your GMT looks like it's been polished. Poorly, may I add. Your DJ doesn't look like it has been polished at first glance.

Interesting. The GMT has the same finish like that as my never polished watches. It has been polished, thought.

Both your GMT and your DJ have a high polished finish. That being said, the GMT case is supposed to be flat, whereas the DJ case is convex, therefore it reflects things smaller than they appear. Think car mirrors, in the US/Canada the left mirror is flat, whereas the right one is convex, both are mirrors, but the left one shows the reflection as is, whereas the right shows more of the things but smaller (hence why it states things are closer than they appear), in most of the world both car mirrors are convex, but that's beside the point. What makes it even worse is that your GMT looks like it's even slightly concave and uneven, so the effect is exacerbated.

This is the explanation I was looking for. Thank you! I will repost a pic of the GMT later. This makes it look bad but it’s in good shape with strong even chamfers on all lugs.

Finish is the same on both DJ and GMT... and every Rolex model for that matter (polished case flanks). The difference you'e seeing is simply case design. The oyster DJ, OP, Explorer I and DD cases etc. have a slightly different case design/proportionality as compared to the GMT's, Subs.

The former are "rounded", while the latter are more "flat".

Adding Daytona to the list of Rolex models that comes with the sexy, curved round cases.

It's one of those things if you've not owned/handled many different models
