5140 vs 3940 Dial Dimensions
Good afternoon,
I have been looking more and more at perpetual calendars Pateks, and I am considering going for either a 3940P or 5140P and I was wondering if a 3940 dial could be fitted to a 5140, considering the case dimensions are very similar. I much prefer the dimensions and exhibition caseback of the 5140, however, I am not a fan at all of the font and font size used. Thank you! |

Not sure on dimensions but would be interested to follow along in your journey. I have been looking for a 3940G or 3940P for months.

I have reservations about this type of modification but…
the saatchi limited release was a 3940 case with a 5140 salmon dial. Can’t say if they modified either or simply made one look like the other?

If anything, this seems to confirm that a 3940 dial will be too small for a 5140. |

Not sure if it’s possible, if the 1mm makes that big difference I would just buy the 5140. I’ve previously owned a 5140g and currently daily a 3940p. While the 5140 is an excellent value proposition and a beautiful watch I don’t think it’s even close to a 3940!
Either way good luck and you can’t go wrong with either! |

The 5140 I believe is 21mm. Isn’t the 3940 ~18mm? the OP preferred the 3940 font as well.

Tangential to your question regarding size. I considered both 3940 and 5140 for a watch to wear not just collect. I ultimately went 5140. I liked a lot but it did not become a frequent wearer as I intended it. Much to the dismay of some of my friends, I moved the 5140 for a 5327. I am much happier with the 5327 now.

Thank you all for your help! I really appreciate it.
It's really too bad this may not be possible. It looks like I might have to start getting used to the font 5140's font after all. |

5140 vs 3940 Dial Dimensions

Unsolicited watch advice: Don’t settle on something like this. It will be very costly, and ultimately you’ll move the watch. This advice comes from experience, too. I owned the 5140p blue dial. I loved so much about it, except the font and the squished numerals on the date wheel. I eventually moved it on. If your wrist size isn’t too big, the 3940p is one of the best Pateks. It’s perfect in every way.

If you want exhibition case bac, just get a 3941. However, it might not be easy to get it in Platinum. According to this article, only 35 were made:

If you could compromise on platinum, the 3940g has an exhibition caseback. I love mine
