Which watch for Graduation?
Hello all,
My father is buying a Rolex for me when I graduate from undergrad next May before I head to law school. He will also be purchasing a Platinum Yachtmaster for himself at the same time. I am currently contemplating which watch to get for myself between the BLNR and the Platinum Yachtmaster. Seeing as I am his only son I know that I will end up getting the Yachtmaster from him at some point to pass down in the family. Ultimately, which watch is better suited for someone who is planning on practicing corporate law? Thanks. |

75% of people will vote blnr including myself. Not much love for the yacht master on here and a lot of love for the blnr. Neither is particularly suited to working in law. The GMT function might be useful if you ever have clients from away. Pick the one you want to look at every day.

Either one. Do you prefer one look over the other?
I like the ceramic bezels personally. |

I think the BLNR would be a great law school watch. By the time you graduate and get your career started, you may want a different watch (not that the BLNR isn't fantastic). I just know that my watch tastes/needs change over time, and yours may too. I guess my point is... get the watch you see yourself loving/wearing now.

I vote BLNR, but the Platinum YM with the blue dial is on my radar as well...I do think the BLNR is far more versatile though.

As a corporate lawyer do you expect to have clients overseas or be in a position requiring a lot of travel? If so, the BLNR is an excellent choice. Besides being an overall great watch for daily wear, you can rotate the bezel to quickly see if the time is appropriate to make calls to overseas clients and the quick set hour hand is great for changing time zones while traveling.
Personally, I got a Sub for graduation and wore it everyday of my 34 year professional career; if I had it to do over I would not change a thing. |

dont read too much into the "functions" of the watch, buy what you want
i dont travel much nor use the gmt function on my blnr the deepest dive i've done with my sub is in my hot tub have never timed a lap or anything with daytona but i do check the date on the sub/gmt about 30 times a day |

I am unaware of any rules written or otherwise about which watch to wear for what profession.

I'd suggest that you try some different ones because making a choice. If you've already narrowed it down to these two, then my vote goes to the Blnr.

Hey pal, congrats on graduation and good luck in law school.
If the choice is between those two, I'd go for the BLNR. Otherwise, I'd say a nice Datejust is a great first Rolex (and great for law firm life, though that's over three years away for you), but that's just me. I work at a major NYC law firm and I see many Datejusts and Submariner Dates among my colleagues. I'm one of the few that mixes things up a bit. Good luck!

Neither watch has a legal function if I recall. 😆
If you'll be in a suit most days I'd suggest a GMTIIC. Perhaps the all back vs blue/black. Just that much more versatile. |

Thanks to all who have weighed in! I see that the TRF community is a bit biased towards the BLNR :) I have been leaning towards the GMT for awhile since I know that I will eventually have a Yachtmaster down the road. I have tried both on and while I like the aesthetics of the BLNR more I feel that the Yachtmaster sits better on my wrist. Aside from the Sub, what other models should I look at in the Professional series that I haven't considered yet?

Look at the Milgauss and Date Just. Lots of dial variations on the latter. Oyster vs jubilee bracelet as well. |

BLNR > YM, for me. I'd consider getting something a little more dressy, however. Datejust would be a good pick as would something like a Master Control Ultra Thin Moon from JLC.
If you're set on Rolex, I'd pick a TT Datejust. |

I would go with either a 36mm Datejust or a 116610 Submariner. A 39mm Explorer will work too for a new lawyer.
