Greetings! My current collection consists of only Rolex, a 116500 white dial and 16710 with oyster/jubilee bracelets and all three inserts. I’ve been lusting over a Patek for awhile now, and would like to add a nice classic dress watch.

Initially, I was thinking a 5167 in yellow or white gold, but then tried a 5227 and thought the officers caseback, automatic movement, curved lugs and date feature suited me better. While at the AD, I tried on the annual calendar 5396G-014 grey dial with breguet numerals and it was so nice! I didn’t really consider it due to msrp but now I can’t stop thinking about it.

For those with Pateks, what are your thoughts on this reference? I tried to post pics on my iPhone but the file is too big. Thanks!

This is the special 20th edition of the AC which was launched by Patek in 1996. The difference between the 5396G-014 and the rest of the 5396 is the Breguet numerals. Personally I'm a big fan of these Breguet numerals as I like the way light reflects off them. The layout of the 5396 is more minimalist compared to the 5146. I almost bought the 5396 blue (R-014) but went for the 5205 instead as I also have the similar layout of the 5726. Wish you good luck for your decision.

The 5396 is a great traditional AC! And the grey dial with Breguet numeral is a limited production release if I’m not mistaken. I tried the 5396 white before but it was a little too big for me back then. If you visit the Patek salon in London you will notice the clock outside the salon has the layout of the 5396. That’s the legacy of the 5396! All the best!

That’s the one! The grey dial is definitely special in person—my wife even gave me a green light to get it. I believe it is a limited production release as well, now discontinued. I forgot to mention that the AD is charging MSRP of $53k, which puts a hurting to my wallet.

Go for it man, while you still have the green light.

That is such a cool Patek. I saw one recently at an AD and he said he thought that dial combination was discontinued, then he got one in fall 2020 in his allocation.

There is another 5396g with the same numerals and it was a limited edition Tiffany dial, nicknamed the John Mayer. But that has a black dial and the extra typeface just doesn't make it as exceptional as the Gray sunburst.

IF you want to "settle" try to get a 5227g with the black dial, it's a beaut as well.

That 5396R-014 (grey dial with Breguet numeral) is gorgeous.

My favorite is 5396R-015 (blue dial with baguette) but it isn't available at the boutique in my city.

I LOVE it. I will be getting the 5396R blue dial sooner or later. I want to have a grey dial Patek and am eyeing the 5146J grey dial.

Anyways the 5396G grey dial is a piece of elegance and i'm certain will get a lot of wrist time.

5396r-015.... My favorite Patek AC for sure. Stunning watch. Only thing is it's not versatile and definitely an occasion watch. The white gold with the breuget numerals is a great choice if it's going to be a daily imo.
