Sub vs. GMT
Would most of you guys rather the submariner or the GMT (black and red bezel). There is something about the GMT that I love. But I wonder, for the one really nice watch I will own, is that a bit too sporty? Curious what you all think. Thanks

Among those two, I'd pick the GMT-II. It's more comfortable, and the rapid-set hour advance and 24-hr hand are both more useful to me than the Sub's depth rating.
If you love the GMT but are worried about the bezel, get it in all black. You can even buy the additional bezel inserts in red/blue & red/black and change them out fairly easily with the right tool and a little know-how.

I would pick the GMT II because it's just more functional with it's different time-zones and with a 100m water resistant I can still do some diving with it without being reminded that it's a diver's watch. JMHO.

I think both watches are "sporty" but fine with biz casual or even a suit...now I am not trying to resurrect the Sub with suit topic!!!
When do you anticipate wearing the watch? |

Welcome.
Historically the Submariner has been the more popular watch. That said the 16710 offers more versatility in both function and look. My vote-GMT. |

I went with the GMT IIc. With the black bezel it looks similar to the Sub but has it's own unique look. I love having the 24 hour hand and the 24 hour bezel. I don't need the Sub's bezel telling me where the 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 minute marks are. The primary use for the Sub bezel is to help monitor your air capacity under water. The Sub is a lot less efficient at that than the new mini-computers that divers go down with. If your a serious diver who needs more than 100 meters of waterproofing then get a Sub. If not, I heavily recommend the GMT II.

I have both. I bought one, then the other, as many of us on TRF did.

If you're only going to buy one, most likely as your "one watch" as many people do, go with the Submariner. You won't be disappointed; it's sporty enough to wear with board shorts, but dressy enough to go with an Italian suit.
The GMT II Coke, as much as I like it, is too sporty to suit everybody's needs. |

Solid logic

I also feel that they are too close in appearance to own both so am leaning toward a white faced, stick dial, Jubilee DJ as my next addition but go back and forth, daily, between SS or TT. |

unless you are diving (or using the Sub bezel for something specific) get the GMT with a pepsi insert AND a black insert...two watches for the price of one...PLUSE the GMT is the coolest watch known to man...just ask Magnum.

Go for the GMT
If you travel overseas, this is the watch to have. You can dive in it as well.

Unless you plan to do serious diving below 100m, gmt gets my vote.. added complication for different time zones

I have both too, they are a great pair! Best divers/aviators watch if you ask me.
But if I had to choose between them. I think I would take the Sub, I love its simplicity. |

My vote is for the Sub, especially the new ceramic versions with the Glidelock clasp.

Sub. I have no need for a second timezone. And I am a long-time Sub lover.

The sub you can wear with anything from jeans to a tuxedo. The GMTs are a bit less versatile. Whereas a sub is acceptable with dress wear, a GMT in pepsi or coke would border on being out of place.

That's a tough one. Both are excellent watches in their own ways. I decided to go the gmt route. But, either one you can't go wrong.

Either one is a great choice..
I wear a black GMT quite a lot and many mistake it for the Sub, but it is a much more versatile and more "comfortable" watch... The black/red is a great looking version too and is a go anywhere, do anything watch....

Just curious....assuming the same bracelet, what is it about the GMT that makes it more comfortable?

I have a SUB, been wearing it 5 days a week for the past 7 years. Between the Sub and GMT at the time the sub was the easy winner.
Bear in mind this was my first Rolex and first luxury watch. So i wanted something that would look good at the office and on the beach and everywhere in between. All the reviews suggested the Sub was the one. _Faide |
