Malfunction while advancing date!

Hello all,

Here is my dilemma. I purchased a Datejust model 116233 in December and this is the first time I needed to advance the date, although I did play with the date advancement feature (quick set) when I first purchased it and it worked fine.

This time, when I pull out the crown to the second position and try to advance the date, nothing happens. I've read the instructions carefully and sure I'm doing everything properly ...... nothing happens! I needed to turn the hour hand in order to get the date to advance.

So here is my question. I rather not travel an hour and a half to the AD where I purchased the watch to have it fixed, it's much more convenient for me to go to an AD nearby at a local mall .... where I original shopped the watch but their discount did not cut it. Can I bring it there even though I didn't purchase it through them and do you think they would be less then accommodating?

Next question ..... When bringing in a watch for servicing under warrantee, should I bring it in with all the original packaging? Do I need to bring the receipt from the AD I purchased it from?

Third question .... How long can I expect to wait for its return?

Last question ..... Advancing the date by moving the hour hand wasn't a big deal, do you think I should just live with it? The thought of separating with it kills me ..... it's my daily watch!

How many times did you try it.... Sometimes it's tricky to get it into that little date change detent..

Also, it only changes the date in one direction...did you turn it both ways........

You do not need any packaging with the watch, in fact, it would probably onlyl bae lost; only the warranty card if you are expecting warranty work... If it's not warranty, no card either...

Any Dealer should accept the watch for warranty and it does not need to be the one you bought it from........

I tried it about a half dozen times or so, and made sure I was turning it in the proper direction (backwards) ..... even tried it in the opposite direction which is for winding ....nothing! I'll fiddle with it a bit more to try to get in the proper position but If it takes that much fiddling something must not be right.

Was this on the setting where you first unscrewed it, or did you pull it out to the next notch?

I can't speak for vintage, but if this is a newer DJ with 3035 or 3135, your statement above is wrong. Changing the date is done by rotating the crown clockwise, i.e. same direction as winding.

Are you absolutely 100% sure you had it at the right notch? Winding and date-change are not done at the same notch.

From my experience, an AD will just send it back to Rolex for repair if he/she feels it is defective. Post warranty, they would open it up and take a look (if they have own service center) or ask that you leave it and call you with a repair estimate. Most ADs don't bother with a watch under warranty because there is no money in it for them. You can always ask them to check if it is a quick fix but not sure if they would agree and I'm sure you would have to pay them for their time and parts (without protest).

If it were me, I would send it to Rolex. Some ADs hire dumb watchmakers who screw thinks up (ask me how I know). Last time mine went in for warranty service, I can't remember if papers were required. I would call Rolex direct if in doubt. Good news is that my AD payed to have my watch sent in :).

I'm not familiar with a DJ but when I originally got my sub date, it was kinda tricky to get to that notch to change the date. What I do now is this: after unscrewing the crown from pos. 1, I turn the crown counterclockwise a few more times, then turn it clockwise a few turns. I then turn the crown counterclockwise a few turns then pull the crown out to the next notch in order to change the date (clockwise of course). I just did this on my sub today. Now I don't know if I should have to go through all that to change the date, but it works for me. I have no problems with my DSSD however. Since the AD where you purchased it is 1 1/2 hour away, give them a call for advice. Or you could go to your nearest AD to browse (which we all like doing anyway) and mention in passing your problem to the salesperson. Maybe they might just help you out even though you didn't purchase the watch from them.
