Explorer Hideous?? WTF!
Ever since I got my SS+WG Datejust with Diamond+Silver Jubilee dial, my wife has been telling me that my Explorer is "Hideous" and then goes on to ask why I still wear it.
What's up with that?! I love my Explorer, it's the watch that got me into Rolex in the first place and I had my eyes on it for ages. She even said that she would happily agree with me selling/trading it and spending extra to get something "better" like a TT Sub or another DJ. I said "NO WAY! I love my Explorer! If I wanted a Sub I would have got one in the first place!" I must admit that it got me browsing around while I was having my coffee this morning and I have to say that given the same choice for price range (£3k-£5k), I would STILL pick the Explorer. It's just perfect! (Although I might now try and get a Jubilee bracelet for it just to keep her partially happy). Anyway, I told her that the only thing I would trade it for would be a WG or YG Daytona and I would then switch to the DJ for every day use. She was keen until I told her how much the Daytona was. Case Closed! |

I don't think that the Explorer can be accused of being a "pretty" watch, IMHO it is all "tool" and rugged with it, great looking and purposeful yes, pretty, no.

The Explorer is still a fine looking watch. Tell your wife if she wants to see "hideous" just watch "American Idol" and take a close look at some of the crap Randy Jackson wears on his wrist!!

I can't believe Kyle hasn't posted yet. The bat/explorer signal must be broken.

Nothing hideous about a timeless classic.

I was having Coffee with Carl (carlhallus) yesterday and the sun was shining and glinting on the dial of the explorer, it looked stunning and I thought, what a great watch, both a tool watch and a dress watch! The more I see of Carls explorer the more I think it the perfect watch, simple, elegant, tough and stylish!

The EXP is an all time classic IMHO.
I love the arabic numbers. I see it as a slightly dressy sport watch. I just wish it came in a larger case Somehow the current size does not fit with my 6'3" frame.

Daniel, don't let your wife "pollute" your mind... The Explorer is a great classic!
But, I do admire your tactic with the Daytona. I'll bet that almost worked. Oh well, keep trying.

I agree it's not "pretty", but I can stare into that black abyss all day long and never get bored. Something about the combination of markers, hands and simple style just do it for me. It's so simple that it's beautiful!
I just wish SHE would see it that way too... |

The Explorer is a man's watch and I wouldn't expect a woman to get it. Straightforward as hell time piece, no bling, just the basics executed beautifully.

Personally, I think the Explorer has one of the most balanced dials of any watch I've ever come across. My wife has a lady's Oyster Perpetual which mimics the EXP dial and looks fab. I just wished that they increased the case size a bit to 38mm which would suit me better.
