Icon5 Montblanc Fountain Medium Nib

Just picked up a Montblanc p146 with a medium nib. After testing it out, I think the medium nib is too thick for my handwriting. Looks like I will have to make a trip in to the shop to swap it for a F or EF.. I also picked up a MB LeGrand RB, my writing is perfect with it!

The problem I am experiencing with the medium nib is that too much ink is flowing on to the paper and I have to write really BIG so that my words are legible..

So with that being said, which nib should I trade the medium in for... F or EF?

I will try to snap some pics so you can see what I am trying to describe...

Richard, please help!

Frankie, I'm glad you made the plunge(pun intended)into the purchasing of fine writing instruments. I know we talked a little bit and I'm just happy for you. As for what size nib to change to go to the store and test each one out. I happen to really like extra fine nibs but will use fine nibs as well!!!

It's different for everyone and the right nib can change if the way you write changes as you grow with it. I prefer the fine nib for everyday writting of notes. My writing style suits extra fine nib too but I fine it to be too scratchy. If you are near a Mont Blanc store, they have testers for you to try them out until you find the one that suits you best. It also doesnt hurt to have different nibs size in your collection since medium nibs may be perfect for writing on envelopes or for writing something more formal.

Frankie, Congrats on the purchase!
Regarding the inkflow, it also depends on the ink. What ink have you got in the 146 ?
Recommendation is to use MB ink for MB pens usually.

Also, consider the paper. Try it on some hgiher quality paper, Moleskine at Barnes & Noble, or some other first.

Montblanc nibs write very wet (that is to say, they lay down very liberal amounts of ink). A medium would write more like a broad from other companies. A fine pen writes more like a medium. I would probably go for an extra-fine if I were you.

This experience shows the absolute necessity of TRYING before BUYING.

I agree. I remember being a little reticent when I saw the MB my bought me had a fine nib, but now I'm glad she did. Definitely writes like more what I'd expect of a medium. The F is just about perfect for me.

With my MontBlanc fountain pens I prefer the extra fine nib and do not have a problem writing with that size nib. But I do own a MontBlanc fountain pen with a fine nib and it does lay down some ink!!!
