Some More News From Basel >>>>
Hey all,
Spoke to my boss earlier (who is over in Basel at present on business) who had a chance to have a chat with the folks inside the Rolex booth today, and he had this to tell me: 1) The Explorer II seen in videos is definitely real, but got pulled at the last minute. Rolex were keeping quiet on the actual reasons behind it, but implied something major. My guess would either be production or promotional issues. 2) A new Submariner in White Gold has also been launched (although it wasn't on display in the showcase). It's a jewellery piece in a similar kind of vein to the blinged up GMT IIs. It features an emerald set bezel, paved diamond dial, and a diamond set bracelet. It is also the first Submariner not to be given an official depth rating on the dial - apparently, it can only go down to 50m before the emeralds crack under the pressure. My boss said it looked very pretty in the metal, but I'm sure it won't go down too well here Thanks for reading Chris |

Thanks for the news Chris! I have a friend there now as well. I am looking forward to hearing his comments also! WG Sub with no bling is my thing!

Chris - who is "your boss" - is he in the industry ? Just that on another Forum the well known James Dowling had an interview with Rolex and they denied the new Explorer 2 ....

He's the owner of the independent AD where I work, and I'm just reporting what he was told by the people at the Rolex stand

I am surprised that Rolex would put anything on a Sub that could not withstand the normal depth rating, maybe they are becoming a jewelry company that sells watches!

I agree it seems lame but they are a business after all and there is definitely a market for the blinged out watches otherwise they wouldn't make them. Probably not our cup of tea (Rolex Forum Readers) but for some this is what they like. Each to their own. Look at the ugly leopard Daytona. I cannot imagine buying something so ugly but Kobe Bryant's wife was wearing one a few months ago. Ugly but still wanted by some.

How many people owned an off-road SUV (like the Jeep Cherokees) and take it off-road? Not many! Also there are a great percentage of them NEVER take the vehicle off-road! Thus, likewise the Rolex Submariners !

I thought the White Gold Sub was expensive enough, imagine how much they will sell it for now?
