So the other day I went to check the date on my Sub LV, and noticed what I thought was a speck of lint on my cyclops. After fruitless attempts to brush it off, I realized that it is actually a scratch that almost looks like a chip was taken off of the cyclops

I don't mind scratches/scuffs on my watch, but this is something that affects function and I notice it everytime I check the date, which is quite often.

Has anybody ever had any success taking a watch to an AD to get something like this buffed out? If so, what price range would the repair fall into?

Any other thoughts/suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

They aint a gonna buff it, they'll probably wanna replace the crystal. You could remove the cyclops entirely, I'd live with it until the next service.

My camera phone isn't high resolution enough to get a good shot of the chip. Too much reflection

Agreed, replace the crystal at the next service. Just try to think of that tiny little scratch as a "beauty mark" until then.

Do you just rub it on in a circular motion? Is there the risk of introducing more scratches if I do not apply the paste correctly?

I was surprised that this scratch/chip happened so easily. I don't recall bumping the watch at all. I was always under the impression that saphire was very difficult to damage.

Years ago I tried to buff out some scratches from a crystal. It's just about impossible to do effectively.

I bought various grit size powder they use for grinding telescope mirror/lenses. I mix the powder with water to form paste and then spent hours going from coarser to finer grits. Don't bother. You are liable to do more harm than good.

If I recall correctly, cerium oxide is the finer grit to polish glass that's only "hazed" in appearance where you cannot catch your finger nail on the scuff/scratch.

My personal experience with the diamond paste is incredibly positive: this afternoon using different paste (from 5 micron to 0.5 micron) in about 40 minutes of work I was able to perfectly remove several scratches from a sapphire crystal of my watch.

That was also more difficult because some of those scratches were just on the "angle" of the crystal (I mean just at the protruding border of the crystal). The final result is incredible, the crystal is new, no issues at all and also the "nail test" is OK !

I suggest you to try those diamond paste (I used the ones in the syringes), it's absolutely worthwhile !

I also used the diamond past in the syringes. I purchased it from Rio Grande jewelers supply years ago. Works wonders if you work slowly and carefully.
