Need Advice: New discontinued Sub 16610 or Preowned GMT II Coke 16760 Fat lady

Hi all experts,

I would like to seek advice on whether to get the collectible GMT Master II 16760 – “Fat Lady” or a brand new discontinued Submariner 16610? Which one should I get as I only can get one piece at this moment? I was offered $5700 for the GMT 16760 by a dealer. What is fair market value for GMT 16760 now?

I really can’t decide which one. I like the old dual coke color that makes it classic but I also like the classic design of the discontinued Sub 16610. One is 20 years classic and the other is brand new discontinued model.

Any information you could supply would be helpful. Thanks!

Well first expect the 16610 to be around for the next few months yet even some around now with the new type serial. Now the 16610 has non changed a lot since its introduction in 1988/9 so quite a few million of those around. While the fat case GMT Master II 16760 in much lesser numbers. But my advice its your choice, buy the watch you want, thats how it should be and not what others think.

What's the condition on the GMT? Has it been serviced? If not, you need to calculate this into the pricing? As Padi mentioned, there are tons of Subs to be had. IMO, I would go for the GMT. At the end of the day, its what makes you smile.
Happy Hunting!

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your inputs. The GMT had a full service by the dealer 2 months ago and the watch is in a very mint condition but without box and paper.

As is always the case, the watch that speaks to you is the one.

Comparing the two can be a little tough in that the 16760 was made in far fewer numbers than the Sub, yet the Sub date is such an iconic piece.

From a collectable point of view IMO the GMT wins every time due to it's history and rarity compared to the Sub.

That said guessing without good pics can be a minefield. The 16760 possed two different dial types depending on year with the eariler OYSTER PERPETUAL being the more desirable of the two.

Pricing is again a guess without pics as different people have different views of condition.

Let's say loose in USD a range of north of 3K to 4.5K depending, but that's really a guess without additional information.

...Service by the DEALER...
As long as the watch is original and no replacement dial/bezel to make it look new then I'd go for the GMT.
Classic and Elegant.
Check the bracelet number too to make sure it matches the year of the watch.

That's a tough call. Since the Sub is likely to be more common for a while, I'd probably go with the Coke. Sweet watch.

I would say the GMT for sure. You probably won't see too many "Fat Lady's" come around in that condition. The Sub's are going to be a "dime a dozon" for years to come. Both are great, and like everyone here has said, get what one sings to you.

Hi Bro,

It was quoted to me at USD5700. Do you think this is a reasonable price for a collectible GMT in resale market?

Take a look at this 1981 TT GMT from ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/1981-ROLEX-GMT-M...item53e0fcb44d

Would it be a better GMT?

Late version 16760, serial #936XXXX (c. 1986) on 78790A bracelet.
A great addition if you are a GMT collector.

Not necessarily better, but it'd be different. I like the TTs, they usually go for a little less and are not as popular.

I would have gotten the 16610...

THe GMT fat lady is used and they wil always be available. THere are not too many chances left to buy a "Classic" new from an AD. While there will be many 16610's available inthe used market, the opportunity to buy the watch New from an AD and "make it yours" would be my priority.

Congrats on the GMT anyway.... I love mine and IMHO you can never go wrong with a GMT...regardless of my comment above
