Current sub or wait for the New Sub?
Hi There all
This is my first post on the forum and firstly what an amazing source of info! Has made the last 9 months a treat in my research for a new watch. This is my problem........ I had decided that for my 30th I will treat myself to a Rolex and it will be a Sub 16610. However after nearly pulling the trigger in March I saw the pictures of the New Sub C due out this year and now I'm in a dilemma do I pay the extra and wait for the new one or go and buy the current version? Also which is the better deal as the new sub is significantly more? Will this drive up the prices of the current model soon? For reference I am on several waiting lists and I have been assured the new sub this year? I'm not looking to make money out of this, this is my watch that I want to keep forever and hopefully pass on to my children. Thanks in advance Chris |

Well first welcome to TRF now basically the 16610 has changed very little since introduction in 1988/9.So there will be few million of them in this world today. And only difference between them all is a SEL bracelet a LEC crystal,a few fonts and a different case stamp. Now the new Sub which will be around in a few months time. The movement same Cal 3135 thats been in production since 1988/9 in the 16610.But now will have the in-house escapement parts but doubt in the real world if it will be any real benefit to the average watch wearer.Plus the new sub will have a Maxi dial, ceramic bezel insert that might look better but functions the same as the old one.And it has the block type case slightly wider looking lugs but mainly same size as the 16610.The new sub will have the new glidelock clasp that perhaps will be better than the old one but only time will tell on that one.I would seriously doubt if we will see any rise in price of the 16610 or any other modern day Rolex just to many of them around. So its up to you myself would get the classic 16610 sub now,or wait a few months for the other.

I don't think that anybody can figure this out for you...
If you have been yearning for the Sub as it is, then I don't know that you should suddenly yearn for a watch that hasn't even hit the display case yet... However, if you do intend to keep it forever, then you may as well have the very latest... It's just going to cost you 20% more.. this is going to be a personal comfort decision... Will you be constantly second guessing yourself if you get the classic, or will you be satisfied ?? I'm happy with my old ones... some others may not be happy with anything but the latest model... and they will keep chasing that "newest" model forever..

Hi and welcome.
Simply a matter of personal preference. If you like a larger and perhaps more glitzy watch then go for the new one. My personal choice is for the current model - it's more classic. But it has to be your own choice.

Get the current one now....buy used.
Then for your 40th b-day get the ceramic one...also buy it used! Save some money for your 50th b-day!

Chris...welcome to the forum. I would say wait and try them both on to be sure. As Padi has said, there will be many 16610's to choose from if the "old" style is to your liking.

Welcome to the Forum. I always wanted a Sub and have owned a Datejust for many years. When buying the Sub the AD informed me of the slight change in model that was due this year. He was quite honest and explained it was a slight change with a heavy increase in price. He couldn't tell me how much exactly. I tried a GMTII which had the glide lock strap and is a similar sized watch.
I was told the new sub would have the same strap, which was part highly polished. I did not like this. I chose to get the currenr Sub because it was what I liked best. Good luck |

It's really personal preference. There is one that's a bit of a compromise though.

New model will cost more.
I'll wait for the new model then decide. If you get it now and like the new one better, then what are you going to do? Sell it and loose a grand? What, another 3 months wait? Or maybe even sooner. It's not like the old model will be all gone when the new one comes out. You can then sit down, relax and compare. The only downside is pay more for the new model. But you get slight improvements with the increase in price. |

I would say wait and try both if possible, as I would imagine there will still be some of the old available, I would say the new strap is worth the wait and money though.

I agree that if you're undecided, it's best to wait to compare the two. You can't lose that way!

You have reasearced and waited for 9 months already..a few more months to wait to compare in person side by side will not hurt.

Wait for the new one, if only to compare. New bracelet and clasp are very nice.
Welcome to TRF Chris Cheers

Hi Chris, I've been there. Dipped my toes into a Rolex 14060 SCOC earlier in the year only to decant it recently in pursuit of something vintage....
Good luck indeed Note to self - Must reduce time on watch forums David |

Pick up a 16610 for a good price. Find one with all the boxes & papers. You'll be happy!

I said: wait and compare, BUT I also know that waiting is painful LOL.... so.... just grab one current sub if you want... the new one will still exist in the next 20 years.... :)

So you never said which model you liked more.
Granted, the new one is only out in photos...but any prelim conclusions? The foregoing should get you part way to a decision. |

Wait for the new one. I own the TT Black ceramic Sub which at the moment is the closest thing you can find to the S/S version, and I feel the upgrades (maxi dial, ceramic bezel and Glidelock clasp) are well worth the extra money.

+1 for waiting
You should wait, it's not that long of a time before you'll be able to try one on at an AD. THen you can make an informed decision.

welcome to the forum :)
I like the new one as well, but the difference is not justified for me to spend 20%+ more so I got the 16610, in my view it is 80% similar, and it won't hurt the "iconic" as long as it is submariner!
