Caseback question
Question: is it often difficult to remove a Rolex caseback because the Bergeon bit won't engage the fillets properly?
Here's the story. I just purchased a pre-owned 15200 Date model from Capetown, who assured me that only 100% Rolex parts are used. When I brought it to a local jeweler to re-size the band, he announced it was potentially fake (it seemed too "light"). He's NOT an AD, nor a Rolex expert. So I told him I seriously doubt it and to give me the serial number from between the bottom case lugs. He then takes it upon himself to go on a Folex witch hunt and tries to unscrew the caseback (in the back office where I couldn't see what was happening). He had a Bergeon hand wrench and bits (or at least a Bergeon style wrench and bits, didn't look too closely). He couldn't get the bit to engage the caseback fillets, although it would engage my 115200 Date model with a bit of fiddling. He did state that the serial number was there and was an authentic Rolex engraving (of course). I am mystified as to why the bit wouldn't engage the fillets, especially since there's no reason why someone would even consider replacing a caseback with an aftermarket one. Thankfully he didn't damage the fillets as far as I could tell. Using a handwrench probably isn't the best method, lol. |

The guy is a idiot. Have the AD take care of everything. Now look to see if the idiot destroyed the caseback while trying to remove it. If he did damage it send him the bill for a new caseback.
The caseback is put on with a vice, at the AD and it is made not to be removed easly. |

Maybe he was using a cheap Chinese knock-off of the Bergeon case back remover for Rolex? There are plenty about.

My advise is dont let people that dont know what they are saying (guessing) or doing (wrong tools etc) touch your watch everNothing good will ever come of it.
Find a good watchmaker with a Rolex parts account and take your watches there.
