Pointed (pyramid) GMT
Geez this is beautiful:
GMTPointed.jpg You know the vintage pieces with the character and thinner case are speaking to me a lot more now than the thick new SuperCase models. Maybe one day Rolex will re-introduce the pointed crown guards, and the gilt dials I mean there is no reason why they can't. Perhaps the new Tudor Chrono Heritage is the first move in the retro direction and Rolex will, in time, follow. The 60's and 70's were magic times for Rolex. I don't own this GMT but it's a great looker.

Yes it's quite a looker.
The only thing better would be a chapter ring gilt. Those pcg, gilt chapter ring GMT'a are making me very h#rny as well, Steve. Lol I think I'm about to reduce the herd, so I can achieve my goal. I can't stop thinking about them. |

Gilt dials. These were the pieces upon which the legend was built.

I wonder how many Pepsis this pic has sold?
I know it worked on me. After seeing this pic, I ended up on a GMT hunt. Thanks Mike!

Vintage certainly does pull at the heart strings, pushing all the right buttons.
It will be interesting to see what Tudor or Rolex do with future releases that harken back to their historical past. Something tells me, and as the Heritage chrono has shown, Tudor will be much more aggressive and adventurous just like they've been in the past. dP

I hope you are right about some of the Tudor line. Many older Tudor pieces are wonderful, but I can go to a Tudor AD overseas today, and I have to say ALL of it seem goofy and has no resemblance to the past. I would welcome a Tudor in my collection of the older designs. As far as new Tudors, I just don't get it.

I have to agree with you completely, Steve. The vintage Rolex and Tudor lines have a very special quality about them. I appreciate the newer products, and there are quite a few techniocal improvements integrated into them that we can't ignore. But there is just something sort of magical about the older GMT and Sub designs.

These are all very nice. I'm enjoying these photos.
I'd appreciate any additional information such as the age and first two digits of the serial number. I'd like to be in the market for a vintage GMT in a year or so and I'm looking around '66 or older. I can see this as being a good reference for originality of dials and hands. That's what I thought too, which is why I kept selling my gilt dial GMTs. What was I thinking?

The GMT in post #1 was made in 1960. That makes it exactly 50 years old. Not bad for an old timer.
As pointed out the correct dial for that watch would/should be the one with the chapter ring around the outer edge of the dial. Nevertheless the dial shown is a gilt dial, and very desirable. It would also have been the standard Rolex replacement dial for the watch in the mid to late 1960's (which is what I expect occurred). Some do not like the jubilee bracelet, but I find it very comfortable to wear. O.K. so you've seen the duco but what about under the hood....it has a stamped 1560 movement with a butterfly rotor, all very original. 1675movement.jpg

Some great pieces. I don't think I've ever seen a 'pointed crown guard' GMT in the flesh. These watches are climbing up there in prices too from what they were a few years ago.
