Please educate one with no common sense...
Hi all!
As some of you know, I love my watches. However, I have broken my wrist several times, and it literally pains me to write. I also have the penmanship of a chimpanzee. Therefore I have never had a great interest in fine writing instruments. However, times have changed, and my new job entails that I sign contracts in front of clients. I have always relied on my trusty $0.20 bic round stic, but dont feel that at this level that this is acceptable. Please enlighten me on pens and the one that suits me. I am left handed, and my hand drags right through the ink I have just put down. An absolute must is that the pen doesnt smear. Amazingly enough, the bics are the only ones I know that dont do this. A fountain pen is absolutely out of the question on this premise alone. Please show me some options as I am clueless and too embarrassed to walk into the local MB store to ask. FWIW I have bought several MB pens, but only to give them as gifts. Please help a fellow WIS out. Thanks! |

Hi Chris, I suppose you can get a ballpen or a rollerball or a fineliner for the purpose of signing documents. Have you got any preferences to which brand of pen you like?
For MB they mainly have 3 lines - Meisterstuck (the classic style), Starwalker (more modern style), Boheme (I would say smaller and more femine). I do have found their ballpens not smearing while the rollerball has smeared on me before. |

The MontBlanc ballpoints all use the same type of refills. So if you try them out at the pen shop and they work for you, then Chris you should be 'good to go' as they say in the US of A.
I think as a suggestion a cool pen is the Starwalker which has a diamond suspended in clear resin at the top of the pen. It looks cool ![]()

I would also suggest a MontBlanc ballpoint. Many years ago a peer told me to get a nice pen and every time your use it to sign your name, think about what your are signing. I have been using a MontBlanc ballpoint since 1990 that my father bought me.

A Montblanc ball point would work nicely.

This is a beautiful Starwalker Black Mystery ballpen! Congrats!
![]() If you get bored with the MB ballpen refill you can get the "no cap gel" refills (rollerball) from Monteverde. More colours to choose from ![]() |

They have Montblanc ballpen type refills using capless gel ink. page 10. Or, they have Montblanc ballpen refills using ballpen ink with more colours - same catalog, page 6. |

Thanks guys, it was either this one or the other starwalker that had the metal grid with rubberized inserts. This one just spoke to me as it looks unique. My SO saw it and said it was "god awful." At that point I knew I found the right one.
![]() I was in a conference room last week and I had to sign some papers. All the others in the room pulled out nice pens and I had my trusty white bic round stic. It was the first time in my life that I felt self concious about my pen, hence my quick decision to get a MB. |

![]() Since the thread is appropriately titled I may as well ask, what is the difference between ballpen ink and capless gel ink? |

ballpoint ink is usually stickier than gel pen ink.
I think gel pens "glide" much better than ballpens. Ballpens you have to press quite hard for the ink to come out while gel pens are much lighter. The downside of most rollerballs or gel pens is that the ink will dry out quite quickly as they are mostly water based, so people have to put "caps" onto the tip to avoid evaporation. Hence cap gels. These capless gels are purported to be not that evaporative and so have better longevity. |

Would it be logical to conclude that capless gels are less prone to smearing?

Not necessarily. Ballpoint style ink is meant to dry on contact. Gels might take a lil longer to dry, based on my unscientific observations.
Sir, that's a fine writing piece! Enjoy in good health! |
