GMTIIc vs. Yachtmaster...
Hello everybody! I'm new around here and though I would get some expert advice from anyone willing. Ok, I currently have a Explorer 1 and it is my only nice watch. But I'm looking for something a little more dressy with a bit more flash. I'm torn between the SS GMTIIc and the SS/Platinum YM. My question is, which is the dressier looking watch? I'm thinking YM, but the ceramic has a good bit of flash as well. I don't ever see anyone with a YM in my area, which appeals to me, different is good at times! But I sure love the look of the Ceramic GMT as well. If you could pick only one for a bit dressier look, what would you choose? Thank you for any help and as always pics are much appreciated!
Btw, do you think the YM will be upgraded to a better clasp at anytime?? |

IMHO if you want a dressy tool watch (how's that for an oxymoron ), you can't do much better than the YM.

Either of the two would be a fine choice, provided they were the SS GMT-Master IIc or the Yachtmaster II WG (44mm).
Flip a coin!

Neither of those watches are "dressy" - they are both blinged up sport watches.. (although the YM doesn't really have a serious "function")
If you want something dressy, why not give the Datejust II some consideration........

I agree with Tools. The DateJust is a Dress Watch, however I would consider the Yacht Master to appear to be more dressy than the GMTIIC.

Glad you found us....... To answer your last question,I certainly hope they do sooner rather than later!!! I ended up doing it myself with a GMTIIc bukcle...Looks and feels great!! My choice would be the YM although the GMTc is a stunning watch also...I think you should try 'em both and decide at your AD..... Enjoy the site, Rob.

Sleddog, may I ask where you may source a GMTIIc clasp?

Out of those two, FOR YOUR CRITERIA, I would choose the YM.
But while I like the YM, I LOVE the GMTIIC. Either way, you win! |

I would choose the GMT2C as the silver/grey dial of the YM does not do anything to me...But hey go with your personal preference, two nice choices...

I agree 100%!! I had one for about 2 months and could not get used to the mono tone of the watch. It is silver on silver. I think that is why it really does not sell as well even though it is a great looking watch. all the other sport watches have at least 2 colors. I never noticed this fact until I owned one and used it for a couple of days.

I would vote for the YM. I have always worn my YM for "dressier" look.

I don't understand all this talk about what is "dressy" or "dressier." To me, any Rolex model is a great choice from casual to black-tie.
It's all about how you execute your wardrobe, and the watch is part of it. No rubber or NATO straps for formal though.

A true dilemma...
...Like asking to choose which of your children you love the most!
Welcome to TRF! You can't go wrong with either IMHO. They are amongst the snazziest of the sport/tool lineup: 1. Both have Polished Center Link bracelets (PCLs). The GMT IIC's is the more advanced with the expandable link and updated bracelet...at moments glance though, both are very similar so this is a personal preference.... 2. Both have a glossier bezel feature than the explorer in that the GMT IIC is the ceramic which has a nice gloss black sheen (with PVD gold or platinum markings) and the YM has the nice raised platinum bezel. 3. The upgraded YM bracelet rumor/threads have been circulating here for quite some time. I have heard and seen the rumor, but the "riddle, wrapped inside an enigma..." that is Rolex S.A. has better security than (insert world's best intelligence agency in your opinion here)! ..So we may only know about it if and when Rolex decides to unveil it. This is a major harumph point for me as well as I believe the YM bracelet is deserving of this makeover. What a great dilemma to face! Let us know what you decide and enjoy the hunt! --Paul This is a toughie. I like what others have said in that you should try to get into an AD and try them both. I believe that would be helpful (I don't know what I'm looking for but I'll know it when I see it!).

For dress I'd say the djii as suggested. Beyond that I think you'll wear the gmt2c much more that the YM. A more versatile watch IMO. Also with the added complication it makes the watch special. Both can be dressed up or down. Welcome to TRF and enjoy the hunt. Slap on a DJII and see what that does!!!!!

I guess I should redefine "dress watch". For me dressing up 90% of the time is nice jeans and a starched shirt, pretty casual by most standards! So I guess I should say a little dressier sports watch if you will. I tried the DJII on and while I thought it was a beautiful piece, I felt like I would need a few more years on me to pull it off. Myself being less than a quarter-century old I feel the sport models suit me best. I haven't seen a YM in person out in the wild however, but I'm guessing it is pretty flashy. More so than than the GMTIIc I assume. I guess what I'm asking is which one could look more "formal" when needed...

Go with the SS/Pt. YM - it's still the ONLY Rolex out there with a solid Platinum dial and bezel. Is it blingy? Yes, it is!! Under certain light conditions, it will blow you away. Just take a look at Charlie Sheen's watch in Two & a Half Men and you'll know what I'm talking about. Yes, it's a blinged up Sub.........but, hey, who's complaining??!! Cheers - JJ

Yep, had my YM for about 1 year.
I love it still, think it is a real stunner! But, it had to move for the TT GMT2C....

I tried a GMT IIc on earlier and now I can't get it out of my mind, that is, when I'm not thinking about the DSSD that I tried on as well....

Hey Six, Welcome from 2 hours South. Midland here....... The YM is a very cool watch and the TT models are a bit "dressy". Personally, I think that the Explorer has the distinction of being able to look as good with cut-offs or a tux better than any other ROLEX. Just my opinion though......I love the new GMT's, but I've not warmed to the "fat" lugs on the maxi case yet. I'd tell you to check the AD's down here, but you'll get a far better deal on TRF. Both have good selections though, so they are good places to do some tire kicking. PM me If I can help. Patrick

I faced the same dilemna so I ended up getting both. I also put a Daytona clasp (same as GMTIIc) on my YM since Rolex wouldn't oblige us. The clasp was very difficult to obtain but well worth the effort. After the change, I enjoy wearing both watches equally but the YM does feel more special. It's also surprisingly stealthier than the GMTIIc or my other watches. Have you seen some of the bling out there these days?

YM not for me..It is dull in my eyes..only the close up camera shots of YM look good otherwise it is not so sharp in real. IMHO. When I had it for just two weeks and while I was wearing it my wife did not even notice it.. she said she thought I was still wearing my silver dial Seiko.. |
