Unexpected WIS

So I was in school today, and I met another kid who is interested in watches. I accidentally wore my Explorer ( ), and he wanted to see it. I took it off and I was surprised he knew a bit about Rolexes, we talked about the Millgauss, and he mentioned Breitling and Omega. I thought it was pretty cool. Meet any watch fanatics lately?

I had a bunch of watches lying on my desk, I thought I picked up my Seamaster but when I was out the door I looked at the time and it was my Explorer...

Right now, I can't think of a single WIS that I know personally, except for the watchmaker at my AD and we are merely acquaintances.

Most people just think I'm a hopeless eccentric and I guess they're right.

Sadly, no. I did compliment a fellow on his lovely pepsi GMT the other day and he politely thanked me and then promptly moved away. LOL. Come back! Don't you want to be my watch buddy?!?!

Not quite a WIS, but last Saturday at our local dog park I noticed a long-time friend wearing a vintage Sub in great condition. I asked him about it and he told me his father had given it to him years ago but he had never worn it.

He rediscovered it a few months ago and took it to the new Rolex store in Century City for a service and they gave it back to him looking like new.

He's doesn't know much about Rolex (yet) but he asked me to wear mine next week so he can see it.

Wait 'til I get done with him...

Nope, the closest to WIS at my school are a few people wearing Seikos and Citizens without much knowledge about the brands/workings.

You haven't noticed that on this forum yet? There are about 6 highschool kids here wearing Rolexes.

I don't find anything really wrong with that, I just find it rather peculiar.

No, I meant I hadn't noticed it here in Los Angeles, where every 9 year old has an iPhone, an X-box, the entertainment system in the back seat of Mom's SUV...

As for here in the forum, 6 out of 47,717 members is not what I would call many.

I guess it's a matter of priorities. There are a lot of other things I could have done with my saved-up $5000, and I expect it's the same for anyone else.

I guess it's not as strange since this is a watch forum, but I see your point.

It's not uncommon to see Rolexes, Tags and Breitlings around my university. However, when I look closer most of them are fakes. Not all though. Next year at law school in Boston I expect to see Rolexes en mass and it wouldn't surprise me to see even more expensive watch brands!

The Sales person at the AD I buy my watches at, has over 60 watches. He is the biggest WIS I know.

I complimented someone on the plane I was on, initially he just said thanks, however when I went on to tell him how many Rolexs I had he metioned all of the watches he had. Sometimes if you try hard enough you just may find out more than had you not said anything in the first place. Not always but sometimes, so for me it was worth it.

I haven't bumped into another WIS in my neck of the woods!

Best I've gotten is a blank stare when I geek out over a stranger's watch.

Nice to know you found a kindred spirit in school, Kyle.

Did you ask her out?

Was watching my niece play soccer a while back. Was wearing my PAM 111 and a guy asks, "Is that a Panerai watch?"

Another WIS encounter was at my dry cleaner. A guy peers over at my Speedy Pro and asks how I like my Moon Watch. He tells me he's "owned that watch before" a clear WIS comment!

Not a word re: the Rolexes.

I'm taking a mandatory yearly refresher course that at times will make you eyes glaze over. So my eye wanders over to my left and lo & behold a retired peace officer sitting next to me was wearing a datejust Rolex. About twenty five years old still ticking never serviced. Then this young Buck next to me mentions he has several himselfand wears an Omega. So now were all sitting together and talk watches. Two WIS in one class!

The best example of unexpected-WIS interaction ive had was at a Carmax dealership. My girlfriend was getting her car serviced and the service manager took one look at my watch (Seiko Marinemaster at the time) and immediately called it out. I was totally blown away that it was noticed, because - not only does it take a good eye to recognize the MM300 over other diving watches - but this is an elusive model only native to Japan and not sold outside Asia.

Of course we chatted watches up for almost 30 minutes before i got punched in the back of the head by my girlfriend.

I am enlisted Soldier in the US Army. It seems like ALL ENLISTED Soldiers think I am crazy when I tell them about buying Rolex and Omega Watches. They swear they would never pay over thousands of dollars for "just" a watch. They just don't understand.

Officers seem to have much interest in watches. I bumped into many officers in the military that are watch idiot savants. They make enough money so I don't see why not. I guess it's all about how much you make. Maybe, I should become an officer...

Thank you for your service, it is greatly appreciated.

How much you make will help you to purchase more, but it doesn't determine how you will spend your money.

I don't know anyone in the military (to include officers) and there are many here who do not make that much.

Some wait a very long time before they are able to buy that first significant watch.

Never met one in all the years of collecting. I thought one friend was, but I soon discounted him when he bought a fake on Canal Street. Another friend has a Rolex DJ that he bought in Hong Kong when he served in Vietnam, but that's the last mechanical watch he bought. I thought that I could get my son involved when he bought a mechanical TAG SeL, but he never wears it. In fact, he never wears a watch- uses his I Phone. So I rely on you guys for my WIS fix each day. Thanks.

The closest thing to another WIS I have met is a former co-worker who has and wears 4 watches. He has his deceased father's Accutron, a Seiko with the symbol of his college, a Seiko he's had forever and a Casio digital that he thought was cool when in school. I'm totally amazed at the students who have nice watches, all I see are digitals. I have NEVER had anyone notice any of my Rolexes and have been wearing them since 1992.
