My Apple TV arrived today

My Apple TV arrived today. I was able to track it on FedEx all the way from China :-)

Man is it slick. I've owned a Roku for the last 4 months and am up to date with web content. The content is about the same, but Apple sure does make it sexy in the way you get to it. Great menus and such.

Being able to access iTunes content on the network is a major plus over the Roku. And all this for just $99. So far I have had no issues. It's hardwired to my 6MB DSL and connected to a 2009 Samsung flat panel via HDMI. I have a Netflix and Mobile Me account and am running iTunes 10 on a Windows XP Pro box with Core 2 Duo and 2GB of Ram if anyone cares.

I've spent the last 2 hours playing with streamed content from my iTunes library, including pictures and video. OMG! OMG! OMG!

This is so cool. With a few clicks of the remote, you have got music and fantastic slide shows going. And those music videos that you've been watching on your PC, etc never looked anything like they do on a large flat panel.

The interface to Netflix offers more search data than I've ever seen on any other player. That includes PC, Mac, Samsung Blu-Ray, and Roku.

Sure we have all seen the content in one way or another in the past, but the presentation is totally un-believable.

Beside the removal of a hard drive, is there is difference between this and the previous apple tv as far as features? I have the 160 gb apple tv and like the aluminum case

This unit is totally different that the first generation Apple TV. Basically it's a streaming device to an HDMA ported display with an A4 processor and 8 GB of ram. About 1/4 the size of the original. Totally integrated with iTunes on your PC or Mac.

I was intrigued so I ended up googling comparisons.

What I don't understand is why apple would do away with a hard drive or at least have the option. I can stream and/or sync with my itunes library whereas now, there isn't an option.

I also read they dropped from 1080p to 720p on the new one. Why? Sure, its price makes it very attractive but it seems that there have been a lot of sacrifices made to get to the $99 price point.

You can't purchase anything through the new AppleTV, but you can now rent some (ABC and Fox) TV shows for 99 cents. To purchase you have to use iTunes on your computer.

And it now has Netflix built in, so for $9/mo, you can stream more content than you can ever watch.

Finally, when iOS updates to 4.2 in November, it can be a receiving device for an iPhone/iPad via WiFi. So I can take an Apple TV to my mothers house, and will be able to stream audio and video from my iPad to her TV, so she can see and hear it clearly.

And it's freaking small.

Nice grab.

The main reason to jailbreak is so that you can run apps. Jailbreaking will let you load a more regular iOS version on there.

I am personally waiting for the Boxee Box. It's 2x the cost, but IMO a far superior solution. Tegra 2 chipset, so full 1080p with no issues. It connects to all the same subscription channels, but can also pull content from network drives, etc... Oh, and the remote has full QWERTY and is RF (radio freq) vs. IR.

BTW, does anyone besides me have a Hulu Plus subscription? It's AWESOME.

Two different Google TV devices were just revealed. They are both $300. Pre-orders already on Amazon and Best Buy.

Interesting because the device also connects to the Android App store and can run those apps plus new apps designed specifically for Google TV.

I have an Acre Revo R3610 with XBMC running all my media. Million times better than anything else I have ever seen. Simply superb, whenever anyone has seen mine they want one and I have installed so many for people now I get known as "that media centre guy"

Apple TV is OK but too restrictive, you can only buy your media from one place and it's expensive, plus it is restricted to 720p. I can buy my media from wherever I like and it just plays it whatever resolution/format/container/codec. It even downloads the DVD cover, fan art, plot, cast, ratings and in the case of TV shows the episode name automatically.

Best thing is that all the software is open source and available for free download. If anyone would like a link to my website where I sell them so you can see the hardware specs PM me for the link. Don't want to post the link on here in case it pops up as SPAM, I'm not here trying to flog them as most of you guys are in the USA anyway.

Have you played with Boxee? That is based on XBMC and is also free. Runs on every OS, I have it on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS. It even runs on the old Apple TV. Not sure yet about the new one.

The forthcoming Boxee Box by DLink is great because the remote is RF and has a QWERTY keypad on the back of the remote.

Actually I haven't tried Boxee, I originally thought you couldn't use it in the UK (I was getting mixed up with hulu) so never bothered with it but I'll download it and give it a whirl to see what it's like. Don't think I'll be investing in the box (despite how awesome it looks) because I already have the Revo and a pretty sweet set up.

Is it just the social networking in the way it differs from xbmc?

Didn't really like boxee, they've done a crackign job on it but I just preferred XBMC. It got the TV shows wrong and I couldn't change them to what they were supposed to be and didn't feel I had the same level of control. On the other hand I did like the choice you have of watching things which aren't stored locally.
