Hats off to the 1530 Rolex..truly a rare breed!
I just picked up a rare 1530 automatic watch and realized that there are quite a few people who have never seen one and in some cases havent even heard of what they are..
here is a link to catch many of you up on the Rolex OQ's and the 1530/1630 OQ's with automatic movement's(see links at bottom of page) http://www.oysterquartz.net/ basically,Rolex wanted to test the oysterquartz case design and also see whether or not the case had appeal to their demanding customers..to this end they took the oyster-quartz case/bracelet and installed an automatic movement in it..supossedly there was only between 500 and a thousand ever made, which makes it very rare indeed.. anyways, you can find out much about more about them with a simple search, but I wanted to give people a quick look at one of these rare beauties..this one has a beautiful tropical dial, which to me just adds to its rare and unique appearance.. enjoy! |

Very cool Steve! I ahave seen a few of those, but you are right...not many around. It looks to be in pretty good shape as well.

Oh yes, I remember seeing them in watch shops in Singapore in the late 70's, I think. You can easily tell by the unique bracelet design, very different from the rest of the Rolex models.

I've handled one too, it's a cool design. Very Royal Oak - Gerald Genta esque. Rare as hen's teeth, they command a huge premium over an equivalent datejust.

We actually own two of these in our Collection. :) This one came in with the center links polished, the other has the brushed finish. DateJust Model 163030 had the center 3 links in 14K Gold. When the OysterQuartz was debuted, the center link was stainless steel and the two smaller links on each side were 14K. I also liked the 'stadium-style' outer edge of the dial.

Vintage parts
Hi, Steve, I'm a proud owner of a black dial 1500 and of a 1510-8. Since you’re an expert on vintage ones like mine, perhaps you could please help me with the following: 1. Where can I find a pre-owned, replacement black (or white) dial for my 1500 (because mine is stained)? 2. Can the milled bezel of the 1501, fit the 1500? 3. Where can I find a pre-owned, original Rolex (or Cellini) brown leather band for my 1510-8 (because it’s missing the factory gold bracelet). By the way, I’m interested on a pre-owned, classic Stainless Steel, Datejust, with a Jubilee bracelet with a black (or white) dial. Is there any source you could recommend for that as well? Thank you!

Looks really great.
One question I have is with the 1530 model, is the case marked 17000 or 1530. |

I am the original owner of a s/s 1530. My father bought one for himself and one for me back in the late 70's. They were being sold by an AD for what I think was about $500, brand new.
My father wore his every day for about 20 years, then had it serviced to look like new. When he passed away a few years ago, it was given to my brother-in-law. Mine has seen very minimal wrist time over the +30 years of ownership. It is in very good shape. I always thought that I owned something special. But thanks to the internet, I realize that I have something quite rare. My brother-in-law, who is not a "watch guy" at all, was very surprised to learn of his treasure, too. Besides the 2 in the family, I have only seen one other one in the wild! |
