Rolex trip to a Sápmi village in Sweden
Hope you all have had a great weekend! Today, I went up into the mountains in the North of Sweden together with my sister, my grandpa and his fiancé. My grandpa knew one of the Sápmis and she invited us to watch when they were going to sort all the village's raindeers. We arrived just before they were about to start sorting and I took several pictures of it
![]() ![]() Please enjoy the little trip! ![]() It was a cloudy day, with some snow falling. This place is about 100 kilometers from the Norwegian border, and about 200 kilometers from where I live. ![]() A very old snowmobile. ![]() This is where they hang up killed raindeers. Didn't happen today though.. Instead, the choosen animals were shipped to a slaughterhouse elsewhere. ![]() An elderly man. ![]() Could this be his walker? It felt misplaced here! ![]() Here are all the raindeers. They were running around in circles and looked very stressed/freightened. The sound they did was very weird, too. The Sápmi woman said it was their "baby sound" or something.' ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, I brought my GMT IIc with me ![]() ![]() They portioned out about 30-40 raindeers at a time into a smaller inclosure, were they sorted out each raindeer to its owner (and every owner had yet another inclosure with an exit from the sorting spot were his raindeers were). The raindeers had different necklaces or marks in the ears depending on who owned it. ![]() The grabbed the raindeers by the horns and then put them to the ground. ![]() ![]() ![]() Check this one out. He looked out of his mind! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is me! We stood outside the smaller inclosure. ![]() Trying to take a nice wristshot. ![]() Even young children were there watching. I think they find this very interesting! ![]() ![]() And so did older men and woman. ![]() Each owner had someone count every raindeer. ![]() Some of the raindeers didn't have an owner and had probably joined the big herd during summer pasture. In that case, these animals were auctioned out and three auctions occured while we were there. The cost for one animal was about 2,400 Swedish crowns (about $360). This one was one of the three: ![]() Hello there kiddo. ![]() The old man made sure everything went smooth. ![]() ![]() Raindeers which was due to transport had their horns removed to make sure that they didn't pierce eachother in the van. ![]() The last raindeer was removed. ![]() Then they sent in some more! ![]() ![]() Where the F*CK are we? ![]() ![]() Can you spot the house? ![]() On our way back to civilization! ![]() Home sweet home ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nice wristshot to end the trip. Hope you enjoyed! ![]() ![]() ![]() //C |

Am I the only one who finds this thread mildly disturbing?
Im not a Vegan or animal rights activist, but this photo essay had an ominous subtext. :-/ |

Perhaps I should have thought about the possiblility of some people getting disturbed, but this is normal to me. We learned about this in school. |

Looking at it IS indeed grim. IMO these reindeer live a heck of a lot better and more free life than e.g. chicken. Go out there and see how they live, what they eat and do before we kill and eat them. Not to mention cattle or pigs.. Cheers! :-) |
