I know the new ones are ceramic, but how about a 2007/2008 M serial? Is it just SS? what keeps it from scratching? or will it get all scratched up?

It's an anodised aluminium insert. They can get bashed, and over long periods of time, the aluminium inserts will fade, but they're easily replaced

And if they fade anything like the Pepsi GMT bezels then they'll look pretty cool 20+ years from now.

It is the same as any other sub. A stainless steel bezel with a painted aluminum insert. It will scratch like any insert although I never had any problem with any of my older model subs.

It's made out of aluminum.

It all depends on how careful you are and what the insert comes in contact with.
