Rolex 16014 specifications

The Rolex 16014 is typically with a fluted white gold bezel. I have been seeing this model offered both on ebay and by vintage watch dealers with a flat stainless steel bezel. I inquired and they say this is original. The models are offered from the 1980s, serial numbers either 7 million or 8 million.

Although I like the look and the simplicity of design, is this original or is this a modification to the original 16104?

Still looking to hear from someone about the specifications of Model 16014, whether it was also issued with a flat, polished SS bezel.

I believe you had the options of a fluted bezel, smoot bezel, oyster bracelet, or jubilee bracelet. Hope this helps.

16014 is white fluted gold bezel. It was not uncommon for people to switch them out but I believe that that refs original bezel is fluted white gold. 16013 was yellow fluted and 16030 was stainless steel engine turned. Be careful on eBay. A 16014 would not have a smooth SS bezel unless it was changed out at some point.

This is an ad from an unnamed watch dealer offering a Datejust 161014 with a smooth SS bezel which they describe as "pre-owned with box." I inquired and they say that this is original. Thank you all for your responses, but still confused. Was the smooth SS bezel an original option.

That ad describes an "engine turned bezel" not the smooth bezel shown.

I think that just might be semantics here, distinguishing it from the fluted bezel. But I have heard that: 1) the 16014 was only offered with the WG fluted bezel and 2) that one had an option of the oyster or jubilee bracelet and the WG fluted or flat bezel.

Could this be particular to DJ 16014 from the 80s? The ones offered appear to be from the 1980s-serial numbers 7-8 million, Does anyone have a 1980s Rolex catalogue or known of a definitive source to answer this conundrum?

I have seen a datejust 1600 with smooth bezel with oyster band but not 16014.

Thats A 16220. 16014 only had a white gold fluted bezel. Rolex never offered a white gold smooth bezel. That bezel is smooth ss

The picture they show in the ad is not a 16014. As nyyankees notes, the 16014 is plastic crystal with fluted WG bezel, the 16013 is two tone, plastic crystal YG fluted bezel. The 16030 is engine turned SS bezel, plastic crystal. The SS smooth bezel, plastic crystal I believe was technically a 16000. On all of them, it is not uncommon to have the inner caseback stamped with a 16000. The smooth SS bezel equiped ones usually came with an oyster bracelet vs. jubilee.

The 16220 is the sapphire crystal (versus the palstic crystal) SS engine turned bezel. The more modern version of the 16030 if you will.

Anyhow, I think they pictured a 16000 and not a 16014. Wrong pic or wrong model # in the ad.

Armed with above, went back to dealer to find out that they replaced a missing WG fluted bezel with SS flat bezel. I like the simplicity of the watch and definitely prefer a datejust from the early 80s with a flat SS bezel, but one rarely sees a Datejust 16000 for sale. What should one cost?

And what should one spend on a circa 1982 Datejust 16014 with a replaced SS flat bezel. As it comes with an aftermarket band, I would have to find an appropriate Rolex oyster bracelet? Or should I just wait?

Rick, I see, they changed the bezel. Not all that uncommon in Datejusts as the bezels are interchangeable. ( by a watchmaker...i wouldn't know how.) I once came across a 1603 that had the white gold 1601 bezel installed. Looked good and the seller made it clear that it had been changed. All the same, with the changed bezel and aftermarket bezel, I would suspect it would sell in the $15-1600.00 range?? Good luck on the search.

Rick, It's a frankenwatch now. I would not buy it. Also what you are looking for is a 16220 and I think it might be cheaper than a 16014. You can get one for probably around $2k if you keep an eye on the sales corner here and on TZ. The replaced bezel might make me question what else was replaced and whether or not all it's parts are genuine. Just me. I've been through this before when I purchased my first watch and got what was described as a 1980s DJ with a sapphire crystal. Turns out it was a 16013 which should have had an acyrlic crystal. It also had the wrong end pieces. And I paid more than what it was actually worth. I now prefer to buy here and TZ and I make sure I have all the details. Good for you for doing your homework BEFORE you buy!

Thanks nyyankee. At least my questions have been answered. The 16220 and 16030, however, come with the SS engine-turned bezel. What I prefer is a smooth SS "flat" bezel. I guess I am looking for the Datejust 16000. Ideally I would like to buy late 1970s / 1980s quickset Datejust 16000 with a silver face, simple stick markers (sunburst dial?), smooth SS bezel on an oyster band. I've mostly seen them on a jubilee bracelet, but assume I will eventually find the watch I am seeking!

ny--just a quick correction, the 16220 has the SS engine turned bezel. The 16200 will have the smooth SS bezel. Other than that they are same watch. although I see the smooth bezel paired with an oyster bracelet more often. Greg

What year was the 16200 introduced? The 16200 somehow seems an updated version (of the 16000?). I prefer the Datejust models which have the "open," old-fashioned numerals which seem to pre 1985-86. I once saw a posting which had a very complete show of the various date wheels on the Forum, but cannot find it. It seems that the proportions of the more recent Rolex (late 80s onwards) seem different (heavier?) or is it just the styling of the dials and that they seem to usually have a polished surface. I could be wrong. The early 80s Datejust with a silver dial and stick markers seems more streamlined.
