Montblanc 149 Users
I cannot date my 149 precisely, but the nearest I have come is it is from the 1970s. This is based on the nib and threading at certain sections. Anyway, I have noticed that when I fill it with ink the reservoir is only partially filled. I never paid much attention to this before. I was wondering if this is normal or should it fill more? I understand that it won't, and shouldn't, be completely filled, but it just seems like there isn't much ink.

After a refill, if you place the pen horizontally, about how much (in percentage) of the ink window is filled? My 149s usually fill up to 80%, some more, some less.
BTW you can try to ascertain the date of your 149 from the chart on this thread in FPN: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/fo...ontblanc-149s/ Use the latest version with lots of pictures. Yours truly supplied a portion of the shots ![]() |

Cool, thanks for the link I will check it out shortly.
It's difficult for me to see precisely how much ink is in there, but it looks as though its 1/3 full (2/3 empty for the pessimist ![]()

I suppose after a refill, just let it sit horizontally for a while.
When you push out all the air/old ink from the pen, do you see the piston actually move down all the way and visible at the ink window? This should be the case. Having only 1/3 filled is definitely not right. Also, when you draw ink, you do put the full nib plus at least the section lip under ink? If the ink doesn't cover all the nib, it can draw air. If all else not working, time to get it serviced. Good luck. |

I think that I have not been submerging the entire nib may be part of the problem. Are you saying that it should go all of the way up to the barrel? I have not been doing that and during some refills I can hear air. I am going to try it fully submerged now.
Yes, the piston does move all of the way down and it is visible. BTW, excellent chart and excellent thread overall.

You have to submerge the full nib, up to the section lip, i.e. the point where the nib is fixated into the plastic/resin. No need to submerge up to the barrel... too far and you'll waste ink.

I refilled it last night as you said and it seems to be quite full now. I think I was not lowering the nib enough and allowing air to enter. Thank you for your help.
