Wow! Rolex Canada wants $868 to service my DJ?
Hi,
My 1987 16013 DJ was due for a full service, it had last had a full overhaul about 8~10 years ago. I brought it to a local AD, and they sent it off to Rolex Canada for an estimate. After two weeks, Rolex finally comes back with a quote of $868 to service my watch! Are they on drugs! Must have had some major issues you're thinking? Nope, in the estimate they just listed the usual service items? Needless to say I told them to close it up and send it back. A local long established Rolex AD who does in house servicing charges $500~$600, last time they did it it it came back looking great and ran flawlessly for for 8~10 years. I should have gone back there in the first place. Have others experienced this gouging from Rolex service? Paul |

I had recently sent a watch to RSC for service. It was over 900.00. Quite a price increase from prior services.

To be honest, $868 for a full service after 8-10 years from a Rolex service center is probably fair. Don't forget, you get a Rolex warranty for 2 years afterward.
A friend just serviced his Daytona (Zenith movement) for about $1,200. My Yachtmaster was serviced after 7 years for about $700. Just as an indication of what other brands charge, he also serviced his Lange & Sohne Lange 1 after 5 years, and it cost him $3,000. (All dollars are US$). |

in 1996 the Toronto RSC was charging $450.00 for a basic overhaul on a TT Sub. Add a crown & tube, various innards for about $200 because it hadn't been serviced in 14 years and some internal bits were all ground up, a new crystal to replace the chipped one, and the bill for my N serial 16613 was $1,038.00 Cdn. all in including taxes.

I paid $1400 or so for two for my wife's DJ and President to be overhauled/serviced--that was with no issues on either watch. First service for the one at 7 years old and the other at 10 years old. They came back looking brand new--well worth it!

Fortunately I have a Rolex Certified watchmaker who was the watchmaker at a Rolex AD doing my services. I just paid a little over $400 for a complete service less polishing a few weeks back. Only parts were gaskets and seals though.

I dropped my Sub off at the RSC Toronto yesterday, which stopped running the other, and will be getting the estimate on Monday. I'm preparing myself to see an estimate at around $1-1.2K.

I also don't know how much you are into watches, but changing the face and hands can have a very negative impact on the value of the watch. I'll PM you a couple of names for servicing in your are that were sent to me by the gracious members of this forum, at that price I'd definitely go for another estimate. Paul

And thanks for the PM Paul. Quote:

I paid about $890 USD for my 1601 to be overhauled. They didn't list the exact price per piece of the movement that they replaced, but I figure since the watch hadn't been serviced in over 15 years that they probably replaced quite a bit. I think your quote sounds pretty standard. That being said, if you can get it done by a Rolex certified watchmaker for much cheaper then that's great

If a local Rolex certified technician at a Rolex AD will do the full service using Rolex parts for $500ish, why would I pay $868 to have Rolex Canada do the same job? Both give the same warranty.

Nothing better than having a highly qualified local watchmaker w/ a Rolex parts account. Excuse me while I count my blessings.

It's a big reason why I gravitated to world of vintage. Shortly after I purchased my GMT from my watchmaker I asked if he had any Tudors for sale as Tudor "snowflake" Subs were starting to catch my eye. His reply was "I'm not selling any Tudors", with a wry smile on his face. He's bullish on their potential future value. His prices are extremely reasonable to boot. The only downside is he's so dang busy it can take awhile to get watches returned. Small price to pay in the larger scheme of things. dP

sad, but i just dont think its worthwhile for me to spend better part of a grand on my 1603 to have it rolex-serviced. its a 1500 watch that will not be worth much more afterwards. if my sea dweller needed 868 of work, i would do it. so, it depends on the model. otherwise, i like going to a well-trained independent. harry in montreal

For something like this I would keep your money here. Stevemuholland3 would have done it for a good bit less. My friend here on TRF uses him all the time...

Do the local overhauls include replacing parts? Ive seen the Rolex jobs come back with a baggie full of replaced parts. Could it be they replace things that don't need to be? this could be the cost difference.

Let's be honest :
$900 is plain crazy > It's rather possible to service 2 of these a day. Yesterday I went to my Breitling service point and it was even a part of the discussion with the grade 4 engineer (highest level within Breitling) Jack |

that does seem expensive given the age and value of the watch. i would consider a good independent in this case.
