What is the first time like!

Hi guys I am new here I have done hours of reading in the last few days and have learned a lot from you all. I have had a few Movados and Tags but I am ready to finally buy my first Rolex. I am 35 and always wanted to be successful enough to buy a Corvette and a Rolex before I was 40. I have decided it is time to buy a new watch and the Deepsea Dweller caught my eye.

I am going to the local AD tomorrow to try on the DSSD and a Daytona Black. What was it like the first time you walked in to a jeweler to try on a Rolex? I am actually really excited it is 5:30am I have been reading all night and cannot sleep. I remember walking in to test drive my Z06 I was so happy to be where I was doing what I was doing it is hard to explain. I honestly think I am more excited to buy my watch then I was to buy the Vette lol.

I am only going to try the watches on tomorrow and then come back on the forum so that some questions I come up with you guys can answer. I will purchase it this weekend I know the wait is going to kill me:)

For DSSD owners I know it is a bigger watch I am a fit guy my wrists are 7 3/4" today but I am working out now and they will go to 8" soon enough. Do you think the DSSD will be a good fit? I know I will find out tomorrow but I am going nuts lol.

I am really interested in hearing what buying your first Rolex was like for everyone I am sure their will be some great stories.

And for the record not married and no kids so I need to get my toys while I still can!!!

Hey congratulations on your decision. I also recently bought my 1st Rolex. Technically it was my second as my father got me an explorer I 10 years ago. But this was the one I bought with my hard earned money hehe I got a GMT II C btw.

For me the search for a watch took 3 months, I had several criterias:

In house movement, not over 5000 GBP, Stainless steel, and some type of extra functionality over my explorer.

I was initially looking at Jaeger Le coultres and were set to buy a watch from them. But then I went to the Rolex boutique on old bond street just to take a look at the new ceramic models as I have not looked for over 10 years for a rolex watch. They only had the GMT II C available, so I tried it on and all that research went out the window and I ended up buying another Rolex which I hadnt done any research about.

Although I wouldnt DISCOURAGE you from doing your research, especially if there are rumours of an upgraded version of the same version or possible issues, I think what is most important is to go with your heart. When you try the watches, you will know which you like. Dont worry too much about functionality or what not, its what you love. Both are amazing watches and I think Rolex watches are great.

You might want to consider that the DSSD sits higher and therefore might get caught on sleeves etc if you wear suits or whatnot but definately has a presence. If I were you though, and this is just my humble opinion I would get a Daytona, just becauase of the amazing movement perhaps one of the best chrono momvements in the industry and its iconic status :)

Congrats on your first Rolex. Just take your time and ensure you get the right one. Savour the moment..it is a fantastic experience. Look after the watch, but don't baby it - it is supposed to be enjoyed!!!

My first time purchasing was my first time even seeing a Rolex in person. I had seen the sub date in magazines, movies, and the like. I was going to west town mall in knoxville, tn and saw a Jared's and thought I would stop and see what they had. I had no clue they carried Rolex. The Rolex case was full but I just didn't see anything else other than the sub. Bought it and left the store thinking wow I just bought a Rolex, a real Rolex. I was 33 and have been crazy over watches the last 6 years. No other feeling quite like that first purchase though.

It was a warm December evening as I walked to the local AD with $10k in cash. At the time Qatar was in World Cup fever, having recently won the rights to host the tournament in 2022. Everywhere there were pictures of the Emir holding the WC trophy at the ceremony where the host was announced and the space above the doors of the local AD were no exception.

Now the company who sell Rolexes in Qatar (51 East) are a general luxury stockist and they sell perfumes, cloth, and electrical goods from Apple and Sony as well as Rolex timepieces. So I walked through the perfumes and although the Filipinas on the stands were offering samples we were not interested. We headed straight up to the Rolex section and after some salaam-aleikumming with the sales chap we were invited to take a seat.

Almost, and possibly all of, the full Rolex collection was available to purchase. Including the WG and YG YMIIs, diamond encrusted GMTIIs and plenty of WG Subs and Daytonas.

But I knew that I wanted the TT GMTII and this is exactly what I asked for. The sales chap pulled out the piece from the selection on display and handed it to me. I tried rotating the bezel and to be honest found it a bit stiff, but after a rotation or two it was smoother. Then I tried on the piece, and I had some difficulty with the clasp. The attendant had to explain it to me.

After a few goes with the clasp I had it, and the watch was feeling comfortable on my wrist. I said I would take it and handed over the cash (at which the dealer did not blink an eyelid, I think that happens a lot here in the middle east ), but asked the dealer if he would please explain all the features to me. We wound the watch with 20 turns, the oscillator starting pulsing and the hands turned with a smooth five beats per second. I was feeling better and better about my purchase by the minute.

Then we set the time, with the triplock crown out at three notches. There was a Rolex clock on the wall that I used as my benchmark. Next, the dealer showed me how to use the second notch on the crown to move the hour hand in discrete jumps. This was to be a handy feature for me as I am an air traveller.

Next the Rolex fellow brought along the box and showed me how the reference number inside the case at the six o'clock position matched the reference number on the box and papers.

Then we filled in all the paperwork , I got my receipt and the salesman removed all the plastic, holograms and so on. Before I left I was able to get a few photos. I have a few of me on my own next to the Rolex wall clock, one with me and my Mum and another with me and the salesman shaking hands by the wallclock.

Then we walked home, but it was dark outside and on the way we went through between some buildings where there was not much light. I remember that I was looking at my piece at the time and I saw the lume light up as we went out of the area covered by the streetlights. I was not expecting this as I did not know about the lume but it was wonderful.

All in all it was a fabulous experience and I expect that I will remember it for the rest of my life.

Congrats on fulfilling your before 40 goals! I think you'd love the dssd. I have both the dssd and the daytona and the dssd feels great on my wrists. The daytona sees more wrist time on the SO than me and I believe you have bigger wrists than me. I bought my first rolex on a whim. I already had a daytona and a breitling in my collection and i was in a casino in mississippi. I had a great afternoon at the blackjack table and desided to stop gambling and get sone dinner. After eating i was walking back to the gaming floor and saw that rolex had an ad on site. Some of my friends raved about their rolex watches, so i decided to take a look. It wasnt hard to decide to buy a watch instead of to risk losing my winnings. I walked out with my dj which ive treasured to this day. You'll buy many rolexes in life but the first one is special. I bought my dssd from a trusted seller here on trf (we did a face to face in south florida) and within 12 hours i was diving to the bottom of the ocean with it. My first experiences with watches always stick to me. Idk where in nj you are, but it is a small state. If you have a friend or someone you trust out of state, you could have the ad ship e watch to that party and save you the taxes. Enjoy the shopping...

I think the short answer to your question is -- Magic.

There are few things in life that are so personal and can be enjoyed 24 hours a day, everyday such as a fine timepiece.

The first one (for some the only one) is special. Combining the rich heritage of a timeless design with the knowledge that you have something with wich you can build a special relationship with is a thing to be cherished.

The DSSD is an amazing piece, combining a special history with all the ruggedness and classic look of the professional line.

Remember however--there can only be ONE first watch. Choose carefully and never let it go.

Thank you for the great stories keep them coming. I just returned home from the AD it was a beautiful store I had called ahead to see if they had the DSSD in stock and they did. The display was at the far wall of the store and was massive they had everything and I tried them all on:) it was amazing. I did not bring my credit card on purpose because I wanted to think over all the watches in my head tonight, what a bad idea! I fell in love with the DSSD it fit my wrist perfect right out of the case with no adjustment at all and looked great.

The watch is a V serial # he said it came in two days ago and seemed honest. He said they will sell at msrp is that what I should pay from a AD? He did say that they are a service center and that they give a extra 2 year warranty and that I can bring it in just before four years and get a free service and life time scratch removal. So I am thinking this is fair. What do you think?

"What is the first time like?"...that depends on whether you are a guy or a gal. You will probably be a little bit nervous, but...oh wait, you are talking about buying a watch!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. In all seriousness your first Rolex will always have a special memory for you and I have found that the first one will always be a little more special to you than any other watch in your collection. My 16613 was my first Rolex and I can say without reservation that it is the one watch I will never sell. Good luck on your search and keep us posted.

I can't say what you should do, but I would go to another ad just to see if you can get a discount. In this soft economy it's worth shopping around a little. If you think that a service costs about $550 that would be the equivalent to a 5% discount of msrp. You should also be able to get a bump on a discount by paying cash.

However, if this ad is convenient to you and you want to establish a relationship, then go for it. I'd imagine that if you went back there and told them you were ready to buy but wanted a discount, they'd probably help you...

When you'll put the DSSD next to a Daytona, I am 100% sure, you'll take the DeepSea, especially with 8 inch wrists. You should be able to get a good discount at AD, they are not that hard to come by., just dont seem to anxious to get one when at AD

Nice thread. i was very nervous when i went to go look for my first rolex. i was nervous because of my age. Due to times before, sales associates usually ignore me. But once they knew i was about business it changed. DSSD is a nice watch, it was going to be my first but when i tried on the SUB C it was over. i knew that the sub c was it. The very first time I bought a Rolex ?

Let me say this..I was 19 or 20 and I did not know exactly
what my watch could do other than telling time.

But I was excited...I wore it with pride and made sure
everyone had a good look...as well as me looking for the time
every ten minutes...back then everyone else wanted "thin"
and mine in comparison looked like a tank.

I liked the white dial with the 3 black subdials
I liked the bezel with a bunch of numbers from 300
all the way down to 60 - no idea what was this for
and..I liked the 2 extra buttons on the side.

The price was a bit high at 175 dollars (or was it 200 dollars ?) even with the discount
I got from the jewelry store manager - where I worked.
I was only making 150 a week...so when my car was 400 bucks (Triumph TR4)
you can see why I thought the watch was expensive.

In this day and age you should be able to get a discount of at least 10%. If they will not budge on price then check out another AD. Your choice of a DSSD is a fantastic watch and should give you a lifetime of use!!!

In September of 2007 I finally decided to buy myself a Rolex and was leaning toward the GMT. I went to my local AD and had a look and tried on many models but I kept going back to the GMT Pepsi. WE discussed price and I was given a 11.5% discount for paying cash(this is before I found TRF or thought to check with other AD's). The sales representative showed me how to use the watch and adjusted the bracelet to fit my small wrists. I bought the watch and have never looked back. I was on cloud nine for the rest of the day. It's a perfect watch for me and I have been treated very kindly by the AD. They are always glad to see me when I come in and we have a conversation about everything. I really like my GMT Pepsi and still look at it fondly everyday!!!

My first Rolex was my used Exp II white dial from Tourneau. I really liked the watch but the longer I wore it the more I liked it and the brand. But, the first NIB purchase was my TT YM from an AD and it was fantastic! Of course the "addiction" has only gotten worse since!

I can see why people get addicted to them I had only seen them in pictures and the pictures did no justice to the DSSD it looks much better in person. I don't know what it was but I could not stop staring at it. It was like I had Adrian Lima on my wrist and could not look away lol. Anyway I cannot wait to go back and pick it up.
