Rolex collections vs many brands?

Just curious. How many of those out there have collections where rolex is the vast majority of the collection vs just one or two of a broader collection. I'm considering trading some of my collection to pick up a few more rolex's but then probably 80% will be rolex. Some may argue to diversify a little more but I guess if you find something that works for you why bother?

I can't see much weight in anybody who would think that a collection needs to be diversified by brand.... It then becomes just a bunch of watches and not much of a collection at all.

You could collect Rolex Subs alone and have a couple of dozen without ever having two the same......

I respectfully disagree.

I would argue that you could have a theme to your collection, lets say GMT/Worldtimers, and have MANY brands that offer a watch that has these functions and would therfore still have a collection...not just a bunch of watches.

I have a "wish list" of watches that will encompass my collection one day: numerous brands encompassing two themes: Rolex and GMT/Worldtimers.

Sub LV (have)
GMT 18k black dial
DD RG chocolate wave dial
Cellini PT glacier dial
Daytona either TT Panda OR ss/wg slate grey arabic dial

Lange Worldtime
Patek 5130R
Breguet Hora Mundi YG/RG

GP WW TC WG
JLC Master Geo RG

I agree that a Sub collection would have a couple of dozen subs without two ever being the same! Subs have such a long history that really allows you to appreciate the nuances of each model... I've been fortunate enough to see some beautiful vintages!

As far as diversification, I'll buy whatever I like. It'll end up being my collection instead of a brand collection.

I would like to add a JLC or two, but the ones that interest me are far out of range. I have two Oris that are similar, but a tenth of the price. Next one will be a Panerai.

I think to the purist collection implies theme. That can take a number of forms--Divers, GMTs, Chronos, Vintage, and certainly Brand.

A focused collection might well include several brands with a central theme.

As always however; the over riding factor is to get what YOU like.

I appreciate the MOD's input as I almost asked whether there is an real definition of a "collection". I, myself, have about 6 brands; mostly diving and dress type watches. I don't believe a collection is based on a single brand.

I like varieties. I wouldn't call myself a collector, just someone who appreciates nice watches.

I have a few brands in my watch box ATM (notice I did not mention the words "in my collection"..) and I'm always keen on exploring other styles and brands.

I think I have came to an end with SS and TT Rolex Green theme, my next move will have to be onto those precious metal models

Buy what you like. Don't limit yourself to one brand, but it's ok to have favorites. Right now I have 4 watches. Rolex x2, Tudor x1, Panerai x1.

Rolex will always have the biggest spot for me.
Second is AP. Anything else is a distant 3rd.

I've always bought what I liked. Brand is an important factor, but a brand alone would not make me want a watch. So I've got a couple of nice Breitlings, two Omegas, a Tag, a Rolex, etc. My last purchase was my first Rolex, but I have no idea what the next would be. Maybe a DJ II? Maybe the upcoming new Omega Planet Ocean? Maybe a nice Pilot's Watch by IWC? Maybe the facelifted Exp II? I certainly wouldn't rule out anything that's not made by Rolex.

He says you need a dress watch, a diver, a chrono and a vintage to get started on a watch collection and that sticking to one brand is not the way to go.

Just one guy's opinion... but interesting.

That's the way I've gone -- I only have one Rolex, the Sub 16610. In a lot of ways, it's my favourite watch.

I also have a vintage Omega "bumper" Seamaster from the 1950s (my dress watch), an IWC Mark XVI Pilot, an old 1970s Tissot Seastar (my sentimental watch), and a PP Annual Calendar 5146 (my posh complicated watch).

Want:

Chronograph: possibly a Zenith Striking Tenth
Another PP: preferably the Nautilus 5712, preferably the 5712R.
Maybe a vintage Rolex
Some sort of JLC

Don't want:

Another contemporary Rolex - I already have one, and they are all pretty much the same movement, dressed up in different cases. [Except maybe a GMT Pepsi! This is a lovely watch. Oh, and I also like the Explorer I]. Call me old-fashioned, but I really don't like any of the new "BIG" Rolexes.

I don't ask for much in life, really!

I know some people don't like the Watch Snob...I kind of like the tongue in cheek humor. I also tend to "collect" this way. Diver, chrono, dress, etc. I also like to diversify brands. Makes my collection more well-rounded, IMO.

Only after I have acquired all Rolex models I like though!

I have a small bunch of watches, but most are Rolex. I'm happy to add anything I like. However, it takes time to learn something about a brand, so concentrating on Rolex is simpler, for me.

im trying to build it with a watch from every brand (as long as i like it) but im going limit to only 3 brands (rolex, omega, panerai)

then different types of each (a diver, gmt, classic)

I don't know if anyone can have too many rolexes. Who has time to think about other brands. But if i were to consider a little bit of variety i would go for Panerai and Cartier. Just my .02 cents

I buy what appeals to me. Around 20 watches in total and 3 are Rolex.
