Here on the forum price quotes off?

Hey,,,, i have been reading and reading and it seems to me that when someone asks what they should pay for a certain watch or how much the watch they have is worth that alot of the time whoever gives a quote is off. I mean a day date complete with bracelet for 4 to 5? Just last night i ran across a thread that was saying 16610 should be around 4 and 168000 should be less? I know the economy is bad and all but i have yet to see this happen or am i missing something?

I have found TRF to be a great place to gauge fair market prices for various models. Certainly there are occasionally sellers who over-inflate the price of the watch they may be selling but this is the exception, not the norm.

What is your point?

People quote prices based on their experience. Are you suggesting that they are lying? The TRF is a very good place to gauge fair market value and in most instances, the prices are cheaper than what you will find from ADs or GMDs. Some ADs or GMDs occasionally offer cheaper prices compared to TRF trusted sellers, but that is not to say the prices people suggested here are unrealistic.

Didn't you just buy a 16610 for the"Impossible" 4K and from a dealer to boot?

Absolutely! Love my Z serial Sub 16610 and paid for $4045 in mint condition with original box and papers. I wouldn't know if it was such a good deal had it not be for TRF and the information people share on the forum.

I'm sure you have a different market than TRF does, you have walk in customers that may or may not know real pricing and will pay what you are asking; here on TRF, we know real pricing as we pay according to this type of market. If you think our prices are cheap and you can get much higher - I'd say you better get buying on TRF. lol

There are prices those are willing to sell for and there are those who are willing to pay. I guess it all depends on the seller. I can list a watch for whatever I want and if someone is willing to pay it then great and if someone isn't then I will bump it and lower my price or sweeten the deal. What exactly are you referring to?

I'm saying that i would loan 4-5 grand on any day date that is complete and if i should be able to buy one out right for 4-5 then i must not know what i am doing, or maybe it's just different where i'm from and everywhere else there are just cheap solid gold models everywhere.

I think TRF is a great gauge of CURRENT fair market value.

It is the speed of information that makes it invaluable.

Here we are not beholden to physical location. A person selling a 14060 in Singapore is competing with a person selling a 14060 in San Francisco who is competing with a person selling a 14060 in London.

As opposed to some person walking into your shop, window shops and compares to other pawn shops, already visited, or going to visit.

The forum (via the internet) makes it lightning fast for the "Suppliers" to adjust to the "Market" or lack of "Market."

The TRF market is different from your Market though, most the buyers here are "knowledgeable" or if not can get up to speed pretty quickly just by reading info here.

Melt value is under 5k for sure, probably under 4k, bracelet is worth more dead than alive, head can be flipped on a strap for a bit, 1803 heads are smaller and lighter than later ones so definitely better off selling, but then you still need to find a buyer, and the market is full of head only 1803s driving the price down, most with motivated sellers that have already scrapped the bracelet and want to cash out of the rest of it.

I really am glad I'm not a pawnbroker as I know its a harder line of work than it sounds, but my aunt's policy in the business for 30 odd years was that she would never pay a cent more than she knew she could quickly turn it into cash for, which would be probably 3-3.5k on an 1803.

I have been piling up a bunch of watches lately and when i come on here and see people quoting prices from 5 years ago i thought maybe i was paying to much, wasn't calling anyone a liar but since i get such a negative response i might call you something else.. Oh yeah and you can't ignore the bay when it comes to fair market value.... Alot of you talk bad about the bay but when no one on here buys your watch where does it end up?

I think it is a fascinating discussion, don't take it personal.

The Bay,walk-in customers, and TRF are all different Markets. Within them all different levels of price knowledge.

I am sure you can sell your watches for the price you want, but the Bay would be the market that is closer to your walk-in customers.

It is the high level of knowledgeable buyers in TRF that keep the prices low in here.

Is this your way of trying to justify the prices on the watches you're currently trying to sell on the forum?

Sales price equals several things:

(1) Obviously what someone is willing to buy, but also

(2) The effort the seller is willing to put into the sale

(3) How much time the seller has

(4) The skill of the seller.

For example, I could probably put an M-serial SS DJ in a fancy antique shop with $6,000 on it up here in Maine in the summer, and believe it or not, someone will buy it even though here on TRF, it'll probably be quoted at $3,500 or less. Do I want to? No, I don't want to wait, nor do I want the watch handled all summer by tourists...

So what the value? $3,500 or $6,000? It would depend on what I did.

Antoher example, same watch...crappy photos and barely a description on eBay might get me $2,500; excellent professional shots and lenghty detailed description might get me $3,500...

In reality, there is NO assigned value for a watch - it's whatever you get with your skill set and environment.

Never feel bad for giving your clients a good price, I'd never met a generous pawnbroker until now, but you're definitely a credit to your industry.

There is no reason to wonder............ This is the Internet and many folks just parrot what they hear, and sometimes that is information from 5 years ago... Others just want to be part of the Forum and don't even have a watch or the ability to buy one. Then there are a few who actually do know what they are talking about ........

Others swear that they always get 30% off on their Rolex from their Dealer over the counter........ You can't believe them either 'cause we know that it doesn't happen.

It isn't going to impact your business one way or the other.. You sell (or buy) in your market and price your wares accordingly..

I am unknown here on trf so i was never really counting on selling anything. The watches i have need no justification. We all love pictures, i thought maybe some of you would enjoy pictures and asking prices. I love this place and not because i want an outlet for watches,

This observation is based on the threads like
How much should I pay for this watch or this was my dad's watch how much is it worth, not the sellers I don't see ANY 5 thousand dollar presidents that are complete here on the forum but have seen them be mentioned. That's all. I'm glad to see that the members have the sellers back. That's how it should be but please read the thread don't invent intent of what i have said..

I think when and where people buy/sell has a big impact on prices, and since people are reporting worldwide transactions that took place at different times, it's not surprising there's a lot of variation.

Personally I wouldn't pay too much attention to the price on a deal that took place more than a month or two ago or in a different location. Even less time if Rolex has increased prices in the meantime.

To give just one example, at one US non-AD dealer - Sept. 8. 2009, 16610 was selling for $4935. Same dealer, same watch, same $6000 MSRP but a year later on Sept. 14, 2010, price was $5875.

I have had every one of my watches serviced. You cannot even imagine the cost of service i have in my stock. Not many dealers can say that. Thanks for your evaluation though kanger what would i do without you???
