Newbie says 'hi'...
This is quite bizarre! I never for a moment would have thought a Rolex forum existed, yet, here we are.
My main interest lies in guitars; specifically Gibson and Martin. I both collect and perform and spend a lot (too much!) time visiting various guitar-related forums exchanging trivia. Ok, I own a humble Explorer 1. I love it for it's simplicity and lack of bling; it doesn't shout 'look how expensive and shiny I am'! I previously owned an IWC da Vinci which was quite beautiful but was much too ostentatious for my tastes. I recently read quite a scathing review of the Explorer 1 at Timezone; do I really own the lemon of the Rolex range? I look forward to 'meeting' you. Andrew |

Hi Andrew! Welcome! No I do not think you have a lemon. Some folks judge others harshly in order to make themselves feel better. You won't find any of that here!

Only when they're photos of REAL Rollies and not those with a flat "S"...

Hi Andrew, the EXP is one of the most storied watches in the Rolex line up.
Some say it was the orginal tool watch. Congrats on a great timepiece!! |

Welcome to TRF, Andrew. Hope you enjoy your stay here. And don't believe everything you read. The EXP is a great watch with a storied history. There are people on certain fora who have a very self-centered sense of what's good. If they don't have it, why it can't be any good.
You will not get any of that kind of crap around here. We are more realistic at TRF. We accept most watches, warts and all. More important, we accept most people as long as they like to join the fun. So stick around and enjoy your time here. Oh, and POST SOME PICS, PLEASE.

Thanks for the warm welcome; it's great to be in the company of fellow nutters and afficionados of fine horological machinery!
I've tried, with zero success, to try explaining to friends what attracts me to quality-like, f'rinstance, a Dunhill cigarette lighter; a simple piece of fire-making apparatus but exquisitely put together. I guess, like someone else said, 'if you have to ask...' I'm afraid pics won't be forthcoming; I don't own *gasp* a digital camera and prefer my old, mechanical Nikon F3HP and Contax G2. Anyhow, after four years, the Explorer is less than pristine! Andrew |

On a separate post, I have just finished pointing out that the IWC perpetual calendar movement is full of faults, if we're being picky. It will need the entire date assembly taken apart and reassembled in 1 March 2100, since we'll be skipping the leap year then and it can't be retarded. Moreover, it drops a day in the moon phase every 122 years! Good heavens, and they say it's a precision watch? Bah! I wouldn't touch it unless it could go service-free until my 160th birthday. As it stands you'll need a jeweller at least every 12 decades if you stick to your IWC, so you're better off with a Rollie. Welcome! |

Welcome Andrew
If you look at the history of the Explorer I it is quite the Rolex. I do not feel for one minute that the Explorer I us a lemon. It is a solid timepiece. |

Welcome Amdrew. The explorer seems like a great watch! I think you will learn to appreciate it more and more the longer you are here. There are a lot of Explorer lovers around. Is yours with a 24-hour hand? If so, you always have a compass! Post some pics.

Hi Andrew, welcome aboard!
Don't shortchange your Explorer, it's one of the watches that put Rolex on the map. Speaking of Dunhill, I don't have a Dunhill lighter but here's Nancy's Dunhill watch.

Hi Andrew and welcome.
That Explorer review on TZ is complete BS and is just one person trying to ruin the reputation of the oldest running Rolex model IMO. The Explorer is a great watch with the proof in the collectability/value of the older models 1060/5500 etc... As for it not being prestine a £200 service at Rolex in Bexley and it will look as good as it did the day you bought it and the customer service is fantastic too Spark. |
