Please help me choose! 116610 or 16610?

Hello everyone!
I have been looking around on here for a little while now, trying to make a decision on which watch to buy. I have found a (F 2004) 16610 Submariner that is at a Rolex AD just back from RSC for service. It has the box, hang tag anchor, etc, for $4400.00. The AD also has a new 116610 Submariner ceramic, that I can get for $6400.00 Both prices plus tax. I have the cash to buy either one, just trying to decide which is the better deal. I love them both and both would make me happy. If I had the 16610, I dont think I could trade it up to the 11610 for the $2000.00 difference. Would either of these be more sought after 10 years from now? Thoughts??

Don't worry about future value, buy which you prefer. There are two distinct camps on this forum so you will get advice either way. Doesn't matter so long as you're happy.
Try them on side by side so to speak, and one should stand out.
The other is do you like new or are you ok with preowned? To some it makes no difference, others such as myself I like to be the original owner ( admittedly at a financial cost). Good luck!

Which one do you like better?
The 16610 is no longer made......the 116610 is the new model & will made for a while.
I'd get the 16610, invest the $2000. & maybe down the line p/up a pre-owned 116610.

I was in the exact same position as you last year mate & quite simply it was the upgraded/modernised calsp & bracelet that swung it for me.

IN MY OPINION the old-style/classic 'tin foil' clasp simply detracted from the 'value' of the watch so much that I simply couldn't tolerate it.

But forget the resale value ten years down the line & buy whichever you like best & want to wear now.

Welcome to the forum by the way....

+1 to that. Stamped clasp really put it down a level but there is no choice in some current models sadly.

The one you like the most is the one you should purchase!

There's no point in settling for one just because it "May" hold it's value better...

I think the numbers of production will prevent either from really being "sought after" if you mean in a collectible sense. I'm lucky to have a 16610 and a TT SubC. I dont consider one better than the other because, IMO, they are quite different. But if pressed to choose...if I were you...I'd go ceramic.

i went through exactly the same dilemma a while back, opting for the older model. and i must say, i'm glad i did. the new sub just doesn't look like a sub to me. your mileage will vary, of course.

but that beings, said, i paid $6k for my 16610 (new, at the AD), and you've got the opportunity to may not a lot more than that for the new model, which despite not looking like a sub to me, is a mechanically superior watch.

so, yeah... tough decision!

They are both good watches. I prefer the older 16610, but that's because it's the watch I've wanted for so many years. If you haven't built any kind of "relationship" with a particular Sub model, then I say buy the one that you like the looks of the best on your wrist.

If its your 1st SUB..I'll suggest you to go for the 16610..reason being its a classic and have all the 'basic' features that makes a SUB great...maybe when you know how to appreciate all the features...you be able to appreciate all the upgrades..just my 2cents.

I would get the 116610. Actually that was exactly what I did! All the new features drew me to it.

that can't be right. certainly not for a new watch. that's almost a grand below retail. if an AD did that on a current watch, they'd be in peril of losing their franchise.

Buy the 16610.(undisputed classic)
Invest the 2k on silver bullion/coin.
Sell the silver after 5 years - your investment will quadruple.
Then buy the new subc.

Many would say the pre 16610 are the classics; in twenty years the subc will be the "classic". Time changes.

I like my old model but the new clasp is hard to pass up.
I will buy a new model as soon as they hit Aus$6000.

IMHO I would get the 16610, and take the extra $2K and use it towards your next Rolex purchase. You know it's going to happen, you are already infected with the disease..... Welcome to TRF.

It all comes down to which one you like better..

Try them on side by side and take your time.
You will find an almost even # here on the forum on who prefers what.
I like the new ceramic model for the case, clasp, dial etc. but thats just me.
Good luck and let us know what happens (with pics )

Had the old, have the new. Get the new IMO.

For me the improvements are well worth the extra outlay. If you want a 'tool' watch get a Casio, if you want a smart expensive piece of jewellery (aka a Rolex) get the one that looks and feels what it cost.

Here a few pics to tempt you - from when I got mine last August ....

My favourite picture:

To save people asking - 6.85"ish wrist

While clearly biased I honestly prefer the 5 digit "look" of both my Sub and DJ to their 6 digit counterparts but the newer bracelets are better...
